TRUTH OR DARE Will Win All the Razzies

The trailer for TRUTH OR DARE looked amazing and I was on board immediately because it was the first thing Tyler Posey had filmed since sadly ending TEEN WOLF. A fun, teen horror slasher flick, everyone loves these movies right? It is out now, made by the folks at Blumhouse Productions and distributed in Australia by the folks at Universal Pictures, it is rated M and runs for 100mins.

Olivia, Lucas and a group of their college friends travel to Mexico for one last getaway before graduation. While there, a stranger convinces one of the students to play a seemingly harmless game of truth or dare with the others. Once the game starts, it awakens something evil – a demon which forces the friends to share dark secrets and confront their deepest fears. The rules are simple but wicked – tell the truth or die, do the dare or die, and if you stop playing, you die.

TRUTH OR DARE was about as good as FINAL DESTINATION 4 or JAWS: THE REVENGE, I expected a lot more from Blumhouse Productions, their recent “horror” films, including GET OUT have been of a much higher calibre. I took foodie mate, Joseph, to see this one. He worships all soap opera TV shows and thought the movie was hilariously awesome, during the credits he clapped and awarded it 5 Stars and said that I need to think of the millennials, ummmm no, it sucked. I vomited bile through most of the movie at the single worst script I have heard in years. When one girl is dared by the demon to sleep with the other girl’s boyfriend the audience erupted in laughter. I am pretty sure Joseph was clapping in awe haha.

The worst part of said “script” was their constant need to explain the plot as opposed to telling a story. A sign of a juvenile studio screenplay with little screenwriting experience, it was like they filmed the pitch as opposed to developing the idea. This makes sense when you see that one half of the screenplay writing came from Jillian Jacobs, Producer for Big Brother, on her first movie as writer. The other half of the writing duo is Michael Reisz, he wrote for BOSTON LEGAL so really has no excuse. Jeff Wadlow directs and while his movies aren’t the worst of all time, this is a massive step backwards from NEVER BACK DOWN and KICK-ASS 2.

There is a positive or two…..

TRUTH OR DARE does offer some good standard jump scares and death scenes, which is what everyone is watching it for anyways. Sadly most are a let down and have been done to death. Special mention to Nolan Gerard Funk for the second best death by writing implement since THE DARK KNIGHT.

And to end on a positive note – the ending is impressive, and this is for more than the fact that it was finally over.

Sadly mostly all disappointing. The biggest letdown was Tyler Posey, did he see it was trashier than TEEN WOLF and realised he had been typecast so just phoned it in? I know he can do a lot better but this was just a flatlining performance. I have no idea who Lucy Hale is but if you watch/ed PRETTY LITTLE LIARS I think you will be happy she is in TRUTH OR DARE, probably the only cast member I gave a shit about. The rest were all  m’eh, I gave Hayden Szeto a point for being so cute because I am truly shallow and in need of a partner. Sam Lerner was so annoying I think he gave the best performance of the movie.

They all looked better with their devil faces on and yet another part of the movie that was ridiculous, but kind of funny – it literally bagged itself out by saying the people’s demon faces looked like a stupid Snapchat filter. Everyone attending the screening was given access to a Snapchat filter and we all made our faces look like it. It was more head-shaking trash for me. Perhaps I am getting a little old and Joseph is right. Think of the millennials!
