THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI

Call me a slacker or call me a flat-out maniac running two full time jobs and this may explain why a bunch of reviews are running late. Sorry about that. , MISSOURI has been out for a little while now. It came in at Number 9 on my Top 20 Movies of 2017 list and just recently Won 4 . Plus let’s not forget another 64 wins and 152 nominations around the awards circuit. It is released by 20th Century Fox, runs for 115mins and is rated MA15+ and I have to add – it is VERY dark.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI SYNOPSIS:

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a dark dramedy from Academy Award winner (IN BRUGES). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (), the town’s revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is escalated.

IT’S A COMEDY BUT MY GOD IT’S DARK:

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is written and directed by Martin McDonagh. McDonagh wrote and directed IN BRUGES and SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS. His direction and writing is absolutely flawless and this is easily his best film (for me) but again I must re-iterate!! This isn’t just a dark comedy it is D A R K. Sure there is a lot of humour but at its heart McDonagh is delving into his odd version of grieving and it was at times hard to deal with. Every player in this movie has some seriously fucked up issues and the intertwining plot lines and twists laced with a sprinkle of borderline (or completely over the line) insanity make this movie a true marvel that breaks traditional archetypes.

It is the film equivalent of temporary insanity due to grief. Hysterical and sometimes depraved laughter followed by heartfelt emotional tears are the soul of THREE BILLBOARDS.

The cinematography score, editing and all the technical aspects compliment the marvellous character and dialogue driven movie but THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a roaring success because of the sublime cast.

SOME OF THE BEST PERFORMANCES OF 2017:

I have to leave the best to last. Firstly – it was a nice surprise seeing in THREE BILLBOARDS (I am now tired of writing the entire title), love Dinklage in anything. as Red was also a great addition – I dig this guy on screen, he cops a hideous beating from Sam Rockwell’s Dixon. And on to that – could this be Rockwell’s best performance? Possibly – it is hard to tell when watching a man so incredibly talented. The characters Rockwell plays is reason for praise enough and Dixon may appear simple but this backcountry hick with half a brain cell is one wonderfully complex character and by the end of the movie you may just love him.

THERE AREN’T ENOUGH PRAISEFUL SUPERLATIVES TO DESCRIBE THE WONDER THAT IS FRANCES MCDORMAND

And as for best performances please stand and applaud Woody Harrelson. The man is a beauty to watch in THREE BILLBOARDS – his interactions with McDormand make the movie. And then there was McDormand – ladies and gents she may already have the Golden Globe but I think Frances McDormand could be an Oscar winner this year. McDormand is a unique Hollywood actress. She does it for the art of it. She NEVER wears any make-up on screen and she NEVER does press for her movies. That is one of the most unHollywood things I have ever heard. Her mere presence onscreen ensures my attendance and THREE BILLBOARDS returns her to a small country town character that while completely different as a character will remind people of her outing in .

I am literally close to being at a loss to describe her performance. There aren’t enough praiseful superlatives to describe the wonder that is Frances McDormand. No one can swear like her, and I have never seen someone relay so much performance purely through their eyes. She doesn’t need to talk, that face says it all. She deserves all the awards for this role and all that follow.
