THE RIGHT KIND OF WRONG | DVD REVIEW & GIVEAWAY

THE RIGHT KIND OF WRONG is a light Canadian romcom filmed around Banff, Canada, and starring hunky Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Sara Cunning (The Vampire Diaries) and Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone). For me it made for a great rainy Sunday afternoon review film with a couple of glasses or merlot a few weeks back :). It has just released on DVD and the amazing peeps at eOne Australia have given us 5x copies on DVD to giveaway. It is rated MA15+ and runs for 97mins and if you don’t win a copy you can buy it right HERE.

REVIEW BY JASON KING

In this romantic comedy, Leo Palamino (Ryan Kwanten) is a failed writer-turned-dishwasher made famous for his many flaws and shortcomings in a blog called “Why You Suck,” a huge Internet success written by his ex-wife. Then Leo meets Colette (Sara Kanning), the girl of his dreams… on the day she is marrying the perfect man. And so, the ultimate underdog story begins as Leo, a fearless dreamer, risks all to show Colette and the whole wide world all that is right with a man famous for being wrong.

Now the film has many flaws but is made successful because of the first premise of the film, the idea that this guy is infamous thanks to his famous ex-wife’s blog, book, movie deal about how useless Leo (Kwanten) was as a boyfriend/ husband. I loved this idea, I wish they had made an entire film based solely on this, it was a little Sex and the City-ish. But the film is let down because of the second premise, that Leo falls for Colette while she is in her wedding dress at her wedding. Then he basically stalks the shit out of her until she falls for him. It is immoral and creepy but it works because Leo and Colette have way more in common than Colette’s useless wealthy jock husband.

The town the film is shot in is a mix of Banff National Park, Canmore (Alberta) and Pincher Creek, Canada and it is stunning, it is these towns I would literally kill to live in, if only I could make money living in towns like this, kind of like why I really want to live in Jindabyne or Thredbo in Australia, just clean air, stunning scenery (Canada slaughters the scenery over Australia, and snow. I love snow, this virginal white cleansing awesomeness literally makes me squeal whenever I see it.

The film misses way more than it hits with its jokes and the characters can be annoying at times but at the same time the film is so laid back and the characters all have so many redeeming qualities that you can’t help but enjoy them. You want Leo and Colette together and you want them to be living in a wood cabin saving the environment and raising bear cubs :).

The acting is decent, Kwanten is goofy and lovable as always, I had not seen Canning before but liked her character and her acting and well, I love O’Hara and I loved her character in this – I just wish there was more of her, he character was underutilised and in the end kind of insignificant.

To be honest, the film is not awesome, it is not crap though and while it will never win awards it is quite charming and something to enjoy on a rainy day, by the end you will smile. It has some great comedy moments but then also some flat moments. It could have been done a lot better and director Jeremiah S. Chechik appears to do mid range stuff that is slightly puffy but occasionally enjoyable (Benny and Joon, The Avengers (original movie), Christmas Vacation for examples).
You can do much worse than this film and if you love an easy viewing romcom then this is for you. If you like some Kwanten perving then even better for you, he is just so adorably goofy 🙂
