REVIEW BY JASON KING

Will Burton (David Tennant: Broadchurch, Doctor Who), a talented junior barrister of peerless intellect and winning charm, specialises in spiriting people out of tight legal corners, earning the nickname, The Escape Artist. Much to the aggravation of his courtroom rival, Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo: The Slap, Skin),
Will is in high demand, having never lost a case. But when Will’s talents acquit Liam Foyle (Toby Kebbell: The Conspirator, Dead Man’s Shoes), who
is standing trial for a horrific and high-profile murder, that courtroom brilliance comes back to haunt him
with unexpected and terrifying results. With an outstanding cast, also starring Ashley Jensen (Extras, Ugly Betty), this is thrilling action drama at its very best.

It has slowly been happening, my mum is starting to get me loving English cop films. There are so many of them I generally just think of a generic UK cop show I have formed in my mind lacking the nuance of their individuality. But then one comes along starring my favourite Doctor, a guy I worshipped for years, and still do, who happens to also be in Broadchurch and my interest is piqued. Then I get the review disc from eOne and started it, and then never left the TV for three hours, I was hooked, obsessed even. Different from Broadchurch, darker even, and more sinister, if you can get more sinister than pedophile murderers.

This is a superb who-done-it revenge film that destroys and rebuilds a man. It is non stop and it is filled with Tennant relentlessness but do not expect to see the charming quirky and oft funny Tennant, expect to see the “I killed my entire race and I will kill you” darkness that lurked deep in the Doctor. I do not think he smiles through the entire three hours.

He is a hard and tough lawyer, a smug man that knows his way in manipulating the game of the law but while he is so good at defending criminals and can get them off on the smallest of technicalities, to him it is just a game of winning, that evil he fails to see he is defending finally knocks on his door.

Brian Welsh (Black Mirror, Mayday) directs an intelligent and dark thriller, it is a story that could be told in a Law and Order CSI type show but this is miles ahead, it took a while to work out why. It is subtle, embraced by in depth emotional characters who are leagues ahead in acting, to them this is them doing art, not earning a pay cheque and the simple fact it is English. Nothing is spelled out for you with subtitles if you missed it, it allows you to think and to fully digest the analysis of the legal system. Everyone deserves the best defense possible when faced with a criminal charge – the entire show just takes this to task. Did Hitler? Did Dahmer? Does the woman I just read about today who literally ripped her own sons testicles off, sealed the wound with superglue, packed his underpants and told him to go to bed?

If you were the best defence lawyer in the country and got paid as good would you care if you got these people off? No – you would be an egomaniacal tool who deserved a wake up call. Well, Will Burton got his call, it was just a call no one deserved.

With special thanks to eONE AUSTRALIA to win one of the 5x DVDs of THE ESCAPE ARTIST you need to either like and share this post on Facebook or retweet/ favourite it on Twitter, you then need to answer the following question.

Firstly, just an FYI on how to increase chances of winning a salty comp; commenting on the review generally holds you in better stead of winning as opposed to just comp sexing :)

WHAT IS THE BEST LEGAL MOVIE OF ALL TIME AND WHY? Tough one for me – I love the John Grisham films, but mainly for the books and I think I would go with either THE JAGGED EDGE (still love that film) or HOW TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD or I have memories of loving the Barbra Streisand film NUTS.

If you do not have Facebook and Twitter then you can still enter, leave your entry below and email me at jkdigitaldesigns@gmail.com telling me you don’t have social media

Prizes will be awarded based on skill and selected purely on the thoughts of the judges, said judges being the Salty Kernels, more likely ME.

The prizes will be sent in the next week or two. Good luck! Oh, and minor housekeeping – huge apologies for overseas readers, this competition is only available to Australian residents.

WARNING – THIS TRAILER CONTAINS WHAT I CONSIDER TOO MUCH TO BE SHOWN IN A TRAILER – IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE ESCAPE ARTIST – I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU ENTER THE COMPETITION BLIND – IT JUST SHOWS WAY TOO MUCH OF THE STORY
