Ah Denzel. Denzel, Denzel, Denzel. What a man. What a legend. What a badass.

From his days in MAN ON FIRE, to his more recent endeavours in 2 GUNS, Denzel knows how to pull off badass. It may be the brash, load and quick talking badass or the brooding, silent, deadly mate. THE EQUALIZER goes for the latter.

Advertised as a film with the calibre to match TRAINING DAY (boasting TRAINING DAY director Antoine Fuqua) along with a great supporting cast of Chloe Grace Moretz (KICKASS) and Marton Csokas (xXx),THE EQUALIZER is really a film to highlight the awe-inspiring, ‘oh snap’ Denzel character perfected over a glittering career of Frank Lucases, Det. Alonzo Harris and John W. Creasys.

The movie kicks off quite slowly, building the audience with Denzel’s character, Robert McCall, shown to be a simple man with simple pleasures working at, what seems to be, an American Bunning’s equivalent. Even then though, one can see that Robert is not quite as he appears with his manner a bit too trained, a bit too formal, and his ability to stay up to the late hours of the night a little bit peculiar. It is through these late nights that Robert meets local Russian call-girl Teri at the local diner where they each sit to reflect on their lives.

A bond is struck between the two over Robert’s (a bit too prophetic) books and Teri’s search for some sort of ‘calm in the storm’ situation which Robert’s quiet, reassuring manner provides. Over time Robert gets through to Teri who looks to create a better life for herself and break free from the escort service in which she is trapped. Teri’s pimp then serves to make an example of her and proceeds to give her a beating so bad that she ends up in the hospital needing stitches.

Aw shit.

No you didn’t.

Here in comes Robert ‘The Equalizer’ McCall; the quiet, kind mannered psychopath who has mastered the art of killing people with a nail gun. Throughout the majority of the film Robert seeks revenge on those who wronged Teri and in doing so ticks off the Russian mafia who own the whole of New York.

So begins a cat and mouse game where the cat actually appears to be McCall rather than the mafia who is led by the villainous Spetsnav Russian Teddy (Marton Csokas). The man is a one stop killing machine who never stops inventing ways to kill people. From memory McCall kills a number of people with; a nail gun, barbed wire, a sledgehammer, shears, corkscrew and a shot glass to name but a few. It actually got a bit out of hand, I mean a gun would be far easier and quicker but, hey, I’ll admit it doesn’t look nearly as cool as seeing someone die by shotglass. Still, this whole film could have been over in 20min if the man just picked up a gun from the countless number of people he killed.

Anyway, I could look to going into actors performance, script, soundtrack etc etc but really this film is just about the action. The actors have admirable performances, enough to keep the script going, while Denzel plays a mixture of the role he played in BOOK OF ELI or MAN ON FIRE. It is the action sequences and dramatisation that makes the film. Many scenes you just sit back and look in awe. Case and point, the slow-mo walk-away-from-blown-up-house goes next level with a slow-mo walk-away-from-blown-up-freight-carrier.

Overall,THE EQUALIZER is a solid guy flick with many a violent MacGyver deaths along with well timed slow mo scenes combined with adrenaline pumping music and stylised fight scenes.

Badass.
