SUICIDE ROOM | MOVIE REVIEW

In trying to continue bringing over my old articles off the older site this one has been the most popular of late so thought it deserved a jump to this site – I watched this film in May of 2012 after grabbing the DVD off EBay – it is such a unique Emo/ Techno film of greatness and I cannot recommend it enough. After reposting this article and watching the trailer again this has to get a re-screening this week.

From May 2012:

I have been wanting to see this film for ages since seeing the trailer online – I completely forgot about it and then saw the DVD for sale online and gave it a shot today and have just had my mind blown. It is the ultimate emo film. It is definitely up there as one of the best films of the year. And the thing that blew me away the most – it is a Polish film and I have never known the Polish for their film making but this is a film of the highest calibre. Not good considering I am half Polish .

Dominik is an ordinary boy. He’s got loads of friends, the hottest girl in school, rich parents and money to spend on brand-name clothes. But one innocent kiss with a mate changes everything. He begins to isolate himself from the outside world, spending all his time on his computer. He meets an anonymous girl who introduces him to the “suicide room”, a place from which there is no escape. Caught in a trap woven of his own emotions, Dominik becomes entangled in a web of intrigue and gradually loses what he cherishes most.

The thing that makes this film so sensational is mainly the acting. Jakub Gierszal needs to be in more and he needs to be in more English films as I just want to see him on the big screen more and more. He has been dubbed as the Polish answer to James Dean and while his hair is raven black in this film he is actually a blonde guy. He steals every scene in this film and he owned the character as much as Heath Ledger owned The Joker. How he walked away from this character unscathed is mind boggling.

Roma Gasiorowska was quite creepy as Sylwia but not in the league of Gierszal. Agata Kulesza and Krzysztof Pieczynski played the parental units well and Dominik’s parents are mostly to blame for his fate. They are so caught up in their busy lives of working to support the lifestyle they have that they leave Dominik to his own devices. He has no support anywhere and is lost in a cruel world that has just seen him outed as a gay boy in school. The film perfectly dramatises the hell a gay boy can face at school – bullying and mental torture that may appear innocent to those dishing it is in fact soul destroying and murderous to the people copping it. That is their entire universe at the time and that is all they know – it is no wonder that Dominik took the path he did at the time.

Sylwia also steers Dominik onto a path of destruction thanks to her love and need for suicide – it is her that I blame for Dominik’s demise. She knew how fragile he was and was pretty much the predator that led him on his path – she got the torture Dominik wanted his parents to have – and deservedly so – the bitch!!

Another winner of this film is the magnificent cinematography – the styling and tone of this film is captured in every frame and it is so beautiful to watch. The film lives two realities – one in real life and one in a second life computer program that allows the members of the suicide room to live a preferred and more magical life – it is very World of Warcraft fantasy and is enticing and addictive.

The names of several real teenagers who have committed suicide are included and easy to find during the Facebook sequences, including: Asher Brown; Deikitsen Wolfram Lupus; and Tyler Clementi (who was a university student). RIP.

You will have to track this one down on Blu Ray or DVD online – I couldn’t recommend a more powerful film with some of the best acting I have seen for ages. Do yourself a favour and get it – out now on DVD/ BluRay from overseas and worth an easy 5/5.
