SPRING BREAKERS: A review by Salty Kernel, Cody

SPRING BREAKERS: A review by Salty Kernel, Cody Sheehan

Being American I understand all to well what the concept of ‘Spring Break’ in the United States is all about. For those of you who are not familiar with it Spring Break (also known as March break, spring vacation, Mid-Term Break, study week, reading week, reading period, or Easter holidays in the United States and some parts of Canada) is a recess in early spring at universities and schools in various countries around the world – in more colloquial terms it is a HUGE party week for US students where abundant debauchery ensues. When I heard there was an art house release coming based on this exact theme I begged and pleaded to check it out.
Spring Breakers - a bunch of silly girls and James Franco

It stars well known James Franco (The Great & Powerful Oz, 127 hours, Spiderman), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical, Sucker Punch, Thirteen), Selena Gomez (Hotel Transylvania), Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars, Bring It On), and Rachel Korine (The Fourth Dimension).
Four best-friend college girls (Candy, Faith, Brit, Cotty) rob a modest neighbourhood restaurant in order to fund the trip of their dreams… to Spring Break. However this is not what lands them in jail. It’s the lavish teenage partying and drugs that gets them put behind bars for a night or two. Who comes to their rescue… the Miami famous gangster rapper ‘Alien’ (Franco) with dreadlocks, gold teeth and bling to the hills! It actually looks a bit out of place for such a white hollywood superstar!
Alien gives his new found friends the keys to ‘his’ city with money, parties, illicit substances and the thrills that money can’t buy.

Being a bit of a Francofile myself, I was very disappointed with his performance. I don’t know why he was cast as this role. He either does not suit it or he cannot perform it well. He looks like he is out of place and is trying to ‘force’ his character way too much. Maybe that was what Director Harmony Korine (Mister Lonely) was going for but it just looked very very tacky. Funny yes but just bad.
The girls really stole the show with this one (which seems a bit obvious given the design of the promotional poster). As it is spring break, there is lots of flesh on screen. I mean that’s pretty much what the majority of Spring Break is.. hot chicks in bikinis and fooling around.

The cinematography (Benoit Debie) is really quite amazing. Many different colours, angles, Some techniques I have not seen before or for a long time. plenty of Kudos here.
What really makes the story is how the girls grow in themselves and learn about life and what is truly important to them. At the very start you can see that they only have one thing on their mind.. “get out of here and go to Spring Break”! They do achieve this and much more than they bargained for.

The girls and the story make this film. Franco doesn’t and would fall flat on his head if it weren’t for them. Then again, is he really the focus of this narrative? I’ll let you be the judge.
I rate this 5.5/10 (or half a platinum album in Alien’s case)! Showing on limited release from the 9th May.
