THE SMURFS 2: THE REVIEW

Big thanks to Salty Kernel, Cody Sheehan, for reviewing this one. The Smurfs have become a commercial piece of trash film now that little kids love. I thought Smurfs were way cooler – I actually still have every Smurf figurine that was released when I was a very young kid. It was my weekend treat from my grandparents – would get one a week from the BP Service stations – they never do anything cool like this anymore. My mum, a ceramicist, also made me a Smurf castle out of clay with smurfs all around it. I was so obsessed with that cartoon as a little tacker, now all I see is CGI rubbish made quicker and cheaper than a chipmunks film. Sad indeed. Oh well, the kids no doubt still love it. Read what Cody thinks……..

THE SMURFS: THE SALTY POPCORN REVIEW

I had the good fortune of seeing a preview of The Smurfs 2 with a friend to many of the Kernels, (in fact she’s related to one of them!) Meghan Stanbrook. She also seemed like the type of girl who would really like this sequel, genre, and story.

Now I will openly admit that I had not seen the original until I was given this assignment. So what was the first thing I did after receiving confirmation from the Colonel.. See the original! I could have possibly checked for an existing review, but wanted fresh eyes.

The Smurfs 2. It’s the sequel. Based on the story of VERY little blue men and a girl who live in the tiny little fictional village of Smurfville. Not far from this village, up in the deep dark forest lives the evil wizard Gargamel. His ultimate goal. Control the Smurfs.

Smurfs 2 sees the gang travel to Paris to rescue Smurfette as she falls into the hands of Gargamel once again! I will say now that Smurfs 2 really requires viewing of the original if you haven’t seen it in order for it to really make proper sense. Otherwise you’ll be asking the person next to you about references to almost everything.

Now the story here is actually not bad. Not great, but not bad. There is a lot of good sentiments, humanistic values and great messages for the kids in this. Also plenty of subtle adult humour, like we’ve seen in the Shrek films. But don’t compare Smurfs to Shrek. Not just different ball parks, different leagues!

Gargamel has become very successful with his magic and powers within the general public. Due to his success & resources he has created beings like Smurfs called ‘Naughties’ that he wants to turn into Smurfs using their essence. The Smurfs mission along with their friends from the previous film is to rescue Smurfette before its too late.

I had problems with a few things..
Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is kind of pathetic as a villain. Seriously, he reminds me of a weirdo little kid who doesn’t quite ‘fit in’ with the crowd. Speech impediment & drool.. Ok!

Gargamels cat.. I forget his name. But just a poorly developed character. Too much cheap CGI. I started to cringe after the first half hour.

The flying birds. I think maybe the writers were smoking crack when they wrote in the birds.

Anyway. Patrick (Neil Patrick-Harris), Grace (Jayma Mays) return with the newest edition to their family, Blue (Jacob Tremblay). No complaints at all here! The original cast performed as expected for the sequel.

This WILL entertain kids for the 105mins it goes for. Kids will love all the over the top stuff. Parents, apart from the subtle adult humour, may be amused. But I’m going to give this a 2 of 5 pops. For Meghan and I, the best part of the film… The blue cupcakes in the foyer before the film commenced.. Yum!

The Smurfs 2 released today in most Australian cinemas.
