RECTIFY SERIES ONE: THE SALTY POPCORN REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – DVD COVER

After spending 19 years on Death Row for the rape and murder of his teenage girlfriend, Daniel Holden (Aden Young: Mao’s Last Dancer, Black Robe) is going home. His conviction has been vacated due to new DNA evidence, thrusting him back into a world he no longer knows. Having spent his adult life waiting to die, Daniel must now learn how to live again. But, his reentry into the outside world may be as unforgiving as prison. He is haunted by the past, dogged by the present, and uncertain of the future. As he struggles to adapt to his new life, his return will reignite the fears of a small town and threaten to shatter his family’s fragile peace. Daniel’s alleged crime divided a community. His freedom could tear it in half.

RECTIFY SERIES ONE: THE SALTY POPCORN REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – DANIEL HOLDEN (ADEN YOUNG) IN HIS CELL

It is very different to Breaking Bad and immediately I realised this and was quite depressed :). But then I realised that when I first watched Breaking Bad, the year it was released, I did not like it. I didn’t even get through the first season and gave up on it. It wasn’t until it got to the final season and my friends kept harassing me on social media to watch it and that I would be an idiot if I did not. I then got all the season, becoming obsessed and catching up with TV two weeks before the finale. I think the same can become of this show. The first few episodes are very slow paced, a few reviewers are claiming the show is not very good because of this but I can see the success of this show will be in the build and the superb acting and writing, the things that made Breaking Bad the remarkable cult show it became.

RECTIFY SERIES ONE: THE SALTY POPCORN REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – DANIEL (ADEN YOUNG) GETTING DRESSED FOR RELEASE

The winners are the acting and the writing and Aden Young (as Daniel) is just superb. I loved him from films of the 90’s like Black Robe, Metal Skin and Sniper. I always thought he was Australian but is instead Canadian, he must have moved here for a while. His performance in this is very introverted and perfectly explains the emotions and turmoil tearing through someone who has been removed from solitary death row and put back into society after 19yrs without outside contact. It is powerfully played with minimal dialogue and blankness.

I also have to add that Abigail Spencer as Amantha Holden, Daniel’s sister is impressive. She is a ballsy woman who brings the heart, light, emotion and gusto to the role that is required to balance out the emotional flatness of Daniel.

The writing of the show is handled by four people that expertly slow build the show and embrace the themes of crime and punishment, loss and forgiveness, revenge, isolation, reintegration, guilt and innocence. Themes that I cannot wait to explore more while my addiction to this show grows.
