REVIEW BY JOSH BROWNE

The most popular and influential strip in the history of comic strips is back in a brand new series of beautiful small-format themed gift books. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Woodstock and Lucy are the stars of four books of Charles M. Schulz featuring all your favourite Peanuts characters . This series will make you smile with delight at the wit and penmanship of Schulz and introduce new generations to a set of characters who have made us laugh, reflect and even cry for over 60 years.

Peanuts is a syndicated daily and Sunday American comic strip  which ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000, continuing in reruns afterward. 17,897 strips in all were written and illustrated by Charles M. Schulz, who was born in 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up in Saint Paul. When Schulz died on February 12, 2000: an announcement was made that Peanuts would not be continued. Now reprints of the strip are still syndicated and run in almost every U.S. newspaper and all across the globe. A computer-animated feature film based on the strip will be released on November 6, 2015.

All four books showcase the best of their chosen character with some classic insights into life, my favourite being a strip in Snoopy’s when he ponders how to get over a failed romance…”what do you do when the girl-beagle you love more than anything is taken from you and you know you’ll never see her again as long as you live? …what do you do?….then the last frame shows his head deep in his food bowl…”back to eating.”

THE PHILOSOPHY OF SNOOPY

Snoopy’s outlook on life and zaniness shine in THE PHILOSOPHY OF SNOOPY and remind us all of the special bond we have with man’s best friend and gives us an idea of what he may be thinking. One of my favourite insights is the title of a book snoopy is to write, “things I’ve learned after it was too late.”

You and your kids will love this book and come back to it time and time again. I was especially happy to find Snoopy’s alter ego Joe Cool stars in the book.

THE GENIUS OF CHARLIE BROWN

Taking the journey through life with a grimace is the ever pessimistic Charlie Brown. A boy who despite his best efforts, learns many of life’s little lessons the hard way. His love for the little red girl whom he never dares go near is a symbol for the way he lives in life, in wonder, but fearful wonder!

Well-loved but despised by almost everyone in his own mind, Charlie bumbles through life bringing joy to almost everyone with his often relatable pet hates. While his family takes starring roles in this series his friends including Schroeder are always around to bring him down.

A book which will bring a smile to all. This excerpt sums him up.

With something for everyone LIFE LESSONS FROM LUCY showcases brilliant words of wisdom offered to one and all, Lucy style. You do learn a lot about sulking and the correct way to go about achieving the best way to sulk, how to torment your little brother and gain money from friends for your of advice.

As she states on the back cover, ‘I have examined my life and found it without flaw..!” You get the feeling Lucy is destined for greatness with such aspirations as wanting to be the first woman president of the United States and always wanting to be the first.

Never one to let truth, nor skill and ability to get in the way Lucy will try and try again, failing miserably. She fails all the time at catching a ball and she still believes she is good at baseball. Lucy refuses to let little things influence her life, whatever the issue is she will succeed, if only in her own mind.

You will enjoy her outlook on life and laugh at her attitude and failings.

THE WISDOM OF WOODSTOCK

Snoopy’s best and sometimes worst friend has a truly unique and slightly twisted take on the world and its inhabitants. Woodstock has many delusions of grandeur but like most of us he sometimes tries to search for his true identity, bringing on a crisis when he almost, but not quite, discovers he is not an eagle.

His fears sometimes get in the way but he manages to charge through and make the most of life, one such is example is his failure to migrate as as he is afraid of getting mugged along the way.

Reading this book put some things into perspective for me and also had me in fits of laughter, I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to take a break and have a good laugh at the funny side of life.

The complete series is brilliant examples of pop art imitating life. I recommend it to young and old
