Iron Man 3 Reviewed

Tony Stark is back in his Iron Man costume for a little more heroics and ego to entertain us with the huge blockbuster, large popcorn and cola, in 3D. And I bloody loved it!

’s Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices (with a little help from a 10yr old kid), relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Stark must battle the mysterious and evil terrorist known as The Mandarin, and Mandarin is backed by a small army of walking fire, they make for some incredible fight scenes, in fact the more I think about it the more I believe this is my favorite Iron Man film. I have never owned an Iron Man film on Blu Ray but I do think when this one comes out I may buy the three of them in a box set. But this film is a clear stand out as it is the less pretentious, Stark is peeled back and has to rely on himself as opposed to his bloody ego and crappy showmanship – it was like let’s rip all the toys out of his hands and see what he can do to get them back, is it the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi of the series combined? Perhaps.

I also love that it is the first film has not directed out of the series, don’t get me wrong, he did a decent job but the direction of Shane Black is very different and a good new tone. Black not only directed this one but also wrote it. He is a great director with his film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang also starring Downey Jr but he is a much better writer. Black has written such blockbusters as all the Lethal Weapons, The Last Boy Scout, Last Hero and my fave, The Long Kiss Goodnight – this guy can write insane films!! Not only that but he was the only director that Favreau and Downey Jr would sign off on and the studio had so much faith in him that they upped the budget from $120MIL to $200MIL so he could make the best film he could, and guess what, he did!

Hands down the best action sequences in the film, and all perfectly placed. Don’t worry, they are all in the trailer so no spoilers. The start of the film, the destruction of the Stark mansion, the middle of the film, the plane scene (BRILLIANT) and end of the film, the out of control, let’s throw every goddamn possible Iron Man action sequence into one and make it an orgy of Iron Man joy! Amazing – was on the edge of my seat with a little anxiety watching these sequences because they are freaking intense!

Now, the acting and characters – Downy Jr is Tony Stark and Iron Man, I loved this film because he is helpless at times, his ego and his pure wankerness are just slapped down – and this made the film for me. He is humbled and has to rely on his brains and overcome his demons and rely on a 10yr old kid. The kid, Harley (played by ) is amazing by the way – he is mini Stark and could easily give it to him – cracked me up. Simpkins has had an incredible career already – he was the 3yr old kid in War of the Worlds, the kid in Revolutionary Road and Little Children, he was in Insidious and upcoming Insidious 2. Holy Crap – incredible body of work for his age.

Gwyneth gets into it in this film, easily my favourite performance by her in the , she is one of the big boys now.   gives us a great performance but sometimes a little more Baron Coen’s The Dictator than arch nemesis of Iron Man – still loved him. Then there was , I am not a huge fan of his bad guy roles but think he pulled this one off and it was easily his best blockbuster character, the first time you meet him onscreen you may laugh, I cackled, some impressive make up right there. Favreau is back and has a little bit more fun with Happy now he isn’t directing also and Cheadle is a great side-kick of sorts in his Iron Patriot costume.

One other thing I loved about the film was how it fits into the timeline of the post Avengers plot. I loved the referencing and how the world has changed since those events, so clever of Marvel to have all these films that can lock together, one noticeable absence in this film is no cameo or appearance from Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury.

This is the longest Iron Man film with 130mins run time and YOU MUST stay until the end of the credits for the extra scene and I do recommend you watch this in 3D, totally worth it. I also suggest the biggest and best cinema with sound and screen of epic proportions – will make a HUGE difference for the action sequences. Iron Man 3 is out now and may blow your mind. My fave of the franchise scores a nice little 9 out of 10 Pissed off Peppers 🙂
