BY JASON KING

INSURGENT raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders (or is it just leader in this one?) will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world. Throw in some Gemini minded, good guy/ bad guy brother and colleague with Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller) and you have some decent acting chops.

INSURGENT | SALTY POPCORN MOVIE REVIEW | TRIS (SHAILENE WOODLEY), FOUR (THEO JAMES) AND CALEB (ANSEL ELGORT) RUN AWAY FROM BADDIES

INSURGENT is enjoyable, it is decent action, good young adult dystopian action thriller, with a love story, but the same I noticed with the first one, DIVERGENT, it never gets anywhere close to the excitement levels that THE HUNGER GAMES movies did. It is like a 70% effort the entire way through. I think Woodley is wrong as the main character, and definitely two young for Theo James, I also spin out that Ansel Elgort plays her brother in this after their stint in THE FAULT IN OUR STARS and see them more as a better suited couple. Her and James do have chemistry but, again, only 70% there.

Winslett is a master actress and she does her part with evil and desperation but the character itself is two dimensional at best with nothing really but her desire to destroy the Divergents. Winslett is better than that. My three favourite characters would be Eric (Jai Courtney), he is just a rabid pitbull and the 2D character suits him well, Peter (Miles Teller) – besides the fact it’s Teller, I just love that he is a snivelling idiot with a misplaced heart and sense of self preservation without a direction to be good or bad, he just does what suits him – although I truly think that deep down he has a lot of good in that heart. And finally, Caleb (Ansel Elgort) – he is just a dick with one direction, that of where he thinks his allegiance should be – with his “kind” over his family, he does a good job of being disliked without actually doing much.

There was also the addition of Naomi Watts in this one and I found it odd having her has a borderline bad (evil) character, same thought I get with Winslet, she pulls it off and I think her character is more for the next instalment. There is a lot more that needs to be explored with her character.

INSURGENT | SALTY POPCORN MOVIE REVIEW | EVIL KATE WINSLETT (PLAYING JEANINE) AND BAD CALEB (ANSEL ELGORT) BASICALLY TORTURING TRIS

INSURGENT does come into its own in the last third. When the action, dream sequences and weird virtual reality starts the film finds its pacing and has some truly spectacular visuals. The scene from the trailer with the building and her mum is great on the big screen.

Word on the street is this one diverges from the book a bit more than the first one, with large sections removed. I thought director, Robert Schwentke (FLIGHTPLAN, RIPD, RED) did a decent job with what he had and no worse then Neil Burger (THE ILLUSIONIST, LIMITLESS) did with the first one but overall I think I preferred the first movie over this, I enjoyed all the training.

I think the downside of this movie is it just isn’t Hunger Games, in a market packed with these dystopian styled young adult stories you need to shine and have some spark, stand out if you will, in this Tris is just too emo, in Hunger Games Katniss is not emo she is bordering psychotic but she is also a fighter and it is that fighting that is amazing, that knowledge she doesn’t want to but she will kill every last mofo if she has to, besides being 100% Divergent Tris can do some fighting but we don’t see a great heap of it and somehow she still always has a boy come to her rescue. Even THE MAZE RUNNER manages more intenseness and has more charismatic leads.

If you like some escapism then you could enjoy this, just don’t go in expecting to be mind blown and things may turn out peachy.
