REVIEW BY DARA SHASHOUA

This is a cool-as-shit documentary, its beautifully edited with its use of interviews (some famous people), graphics and pretty much a step by step guide to literally start selling drugs. For the first half of the doco you are sitting watching how much money can be made when one decides or has to start selling drugs to survive. Most people interviewed didn’t set out to start dealing however life choices including addiction set them on the path.

The other half of the documentary illustrates exactly how ineffectual the American War on Drugs actually is. It is a huge revenue builder for the government and has resulted in way too harsh penalties for those caught with even small amounts of drugs, or even living in a house that was raided for selling drugs.

America has 5% of the world’s population yet it holds 25% of the worlds prisoners. Now that’s a scary statistic. Ariana Huffington states that America now builds more prisons than it does universities. If America stopped syphoning so much funding into the War on Drugs it could effectively fix pretty much every other problem that the country faces including poverty, unemployment and education.

Drugs and drug enforcement is a $400 billion global industry, and marijuana is the most profitable crop in America. A dealer with a good sized operation can make around $1 million per year. Just stop and think about those facts for a moment. Really. Clearly any of the measures being taken are not working. However, after stating those facts alcohol is still the highest killer in America with 47,000 deaths per year from alcohol related disease/injuries/stupidity and alcohol is legal.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY SELLING DRUGS: THE SALTY POPCORN REVIEW – ARTWORK

The interviews were what made the documentary for me.  Director Matthew Cooke really did his research and showed interviews with people from every angle within the industry. From dealers, to ex-cops, to policy writers, lawyers  to celebrities including an amazing moment with Eminem who basically talked about his drug use and spiral into addiction and how he got out of it. One of my favourites was Barry Cooper, an ex cop who realised how much police departments and governments were profiting from drug busts and went to the other side.  He now has a business where he helps people get off drug charges when they have had drug planted on them. This is the first paragraph from his Wikipedia page, I think it sums him up fairly well –

Barry Cooper (born May 21, 1969) is an anti-drug-war lecturer, film maker, criminal defense expert witness and law lecturer known for his DVD series, “NeverGetBusted” and his Internet reality show, KopBusters. Cooper formerly served as one of the United State’s top drug enforcement officers.

The Rockefeller Drug Laws in America currently have incredibly harsh penalties for anyone caught dealing or in the vicinity of drugs. Many celebrities such as and have spoken out against these harsh penalties. There are women behind bars for 25 years for living in a house with someone who was selling drugs. You actually serve more time for drug possession than you do for murder in some cases.

How to Make Money Selling Drugs is pretty much what the title says it is, and a whole lot more. I watched it 4 days ago and am still thinking about it. It is so well put together and is entertaining as well as serving as an educational tool for the viewer. Easily my most favourite documentary I have watched in ages.
