HOW I LIVE NOW | BLU RAY REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

As soon as I saw this trailer for HOW I LIVE NOW I was sold, it looked similar to TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN, it looked fresh and quirky and slightly hippy and it had one of my fave kid actors in it, Tom Holland – he just owned THE IMPOSSIBLE. I am not a huge fan of Saoirse Ronan but she can definitely act. Plus the war torn struggling kids thing would definitely have a twang on the old heart strings and I just knew I would like it. I was not disappointed, it is definitely not perfect but it is told well. Thanks to our mates at MADMAN we also have 5x copies of HOW I LIVE NOW on BLU RAY to giveaway. See below to find out how to win and if you miss out, have no fear, you can purchase it HERE.

REVIEW BY JASON KING

Daisy (Oscar® nominee Saoirse Ronan, ATONEMENT, HANNA), a teenager from New York, is sent to the English countryside for the summer to stay with cousins. She soon immerses herself into her new life – made all the more easy when she falls for the sexy, thoughtful Eddie (SUNSHINE ON LEITH’S George MacKay) – until their perfect summer is blown apart by the sudden outbreak of a terrifying nuclear war.

Along with Eddie’s younger siblings, Isaac (Tom Holland, THE IMPOSSIBLE) and Piper, they are left in isolation and forced to fend for themselves. When they are violently separated, Daisy must embark on a perilous journey in order to be reunited with the boy she loves. Eddie is never far from Daisy’s mind but as her journey to find him becomes more desperate, the idea of what she may or may not find consumes her consciousness and haunts her soul.

HOW I LIVE NOW, SAOIRSE RONAN SITTING ON A WINDOW SILL
HOW I LIVE NOW | THE SALTY POPCORN REVIEW | SAOIRSE RONAN SITTING ON A WINDOW SILL

This teenage/angst/love/war film, HOW I LIVE NOW, is directed by the very talented Kevin Macdonald, who brought us such awesome films as THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and TOUCHING THE VOID, we will ignore heavily a certain stinker known as THE EAGLE  :). It is written by four people who have taken their source material from Meg Rosoff who originally wrote the award winning young adult novel of the same name back in 2004. I think Rosoff, and subsequently the four film writers, were trying to immerse us into the world of teenagers, all pop culture, colourful, lovely and naive but underneath this idyllic world ‘a storm is brewing Harry.’ It then thrusts the kids into a world of war, and through circumstance, a parentless existence encloses them and all would have been well, they are on the beautiful family property and they would get by, but the world and the war is sweeping through and the allies rip them apart “for their own protection.” Due to this their world now totes sux. Using what they have they do everything they can to get back to each other on the farm.

HOW I LIVE NOW, SAOIRSE RONAN HOLDING A GUN

The film is shot beautifully, the cinematography by Franz Lustig, captures everything, the youthfulness, the colours of happy life and then the starkness of near single colours for the desperation and loneliness of survival. Macdonald directs a great film mostly but it lost connection somewhere in there. My favourite films star kids, I have always wanted some and somehow I am still a kid in there, seeing a kid in desperation or pain literally destroys me and some scenes in the film do not hold back and they are good powerful scenes but somehow my heart strings were not twanging enough and I think it stemmed from not being a fan of Ronan. She delivers an OK performance but her character is such a snotty nosed brat and so rude at the start I then found it hard to come back and like her, even though she has to step up and be the one to overcome (nearly) the most adversity. Watching her treat little Piper (Harley Bird) like crap nearly did my head in.

I also would have preferred the story to treat this as an ensemble cast and to bounce between the differing stories instead of sticking with Daisy’s (Ronan) story. The boys had a way more horrendous story and I felt for them more, even though we hardly ever see them. I also felt that Holland was so underutilised in this film it was silly. The kid is a genius child actor and that needs to be used and not pushed into the background. George MacKay was great in his role as Eddie (I cannot wait to see his upcoming SUNSHINE ON LEITH. As for Harley Bird, as Piper, she is just adorable and hard not to love. How do you explain war to someone so young? How does anyone, let alone a kid so young, ever recover from the atrocities of war? Watching Eddie in the end scenes said it all for me.

The other thing I did not quite get about the film, it is taken as a given and not overly paid much attention. Daisy falls in love and has a relationship with her first cousin, Eddie! What gives with that?

This is definitely a book I will be reading, I really do want to know what happened with the boys and I would love to see if you find out what happens to all of them after the tale we viewed onscreen. The story is definitely more plausible and real than TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN, it is also less enjoyable and shows more truths and less blockbuster action, some of them will hurt. One bit of trivia that really shocked me in this film. Daisy (Ronan) shoots someone, the incredibly mind blowing thing about that…………her real life father played the guy she shot. HOW I LOVE NOW is out now on Blu Ray and DVD, is rated MA15+ and runs for 101mins. It is quite powerful and enjoyable with some confronting and sad moments but lacking in overall connection. You can do much worse than this.
