GLADIATOR | KERNEL BEN’S FAVOURITE FILM

The Grange Range of Kernel’s favourites continues with Kernel Ben reviewing his favourite film. One of the best action film epics of our time and definitely the best gladiator film I have seen. Ben’s favourite film is GLADIATOR starring Australia’s Russell Crowe, the film that made him a Hollywood hit and gave him enough celebrity to start throwing phones and getting offered scripts for everything. Personally, I do not think he has ever matched or bettered his performance since this film. The trivia for the film is amazing to read – you can suss it HERE – but I have to point out some that I love. The film was offered to Mel Gibson to play Maximus but he turned it down stating he did not believe he was suitable to play the character at 43yrs old. The scratches on Russel’s face in the opening are all real, his horse backed him into bushes and he got scratched up, and during filming he broke bones in his foot and his hip, and injured both bicep tendons. Anyways, enough from me, enjoy Ben’s review………….all the best……………..JK.

REVIEW BY BEN MCHOLME

When I was tasked with writing a review on my favourite film I didn’t even know where to begin. I love comedy, I love action and I love war movies. Then it hit me, the movie that I have not only seen on multiple occasions but can remember the first time I saw it, the emotions I felt and how vastly different these emotions are when I watch it now. GLADIATOR . What an epic. Winner of a list of awards including the Oscar for Best director (Ridley Scott), Best lead Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Supporting Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Effects. In total winning 8 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes.

The first time I watched this movie I was 10 or 11, my mum was strongly against it (due to the violence) however nothing would stop my dad and I going to watch this on the big screen together. I felt brave, I felt excited and I felt like a man. As anyone who has seen Gladiator would know the first scene in the film is not for the faint hearted, getting right into the action and gore. The Roman soldiers are in battle formations waiting for the barbarians. The barbarians arrive and one of many memorable quotes is uttered “People should know when they are conquered” A headless rider on a horse comes through the roman battle lines and the leader of the barbarians throws a head into the middle of the battle ground. As a young child this was the moment I decided my mum was right in being worried for me. I was scared and closed my eyes for fear of seeing the dreaded dead eyes. However through the fear was nothing but excitement, exhilaration and  anticipation.

GLADIATOR | THE SALTY POPCORN REVIEW | LUCILLA (CONNIE NIELSEN) AND COMMODUS (JOAQUIN PHOENIX)

For those that don’t know Gladiator is a film about Maximus (Russell Crowe) a Roman General whom is loved by the Roman emperor. Unfortunately the emperor is murdered and the power struggle between Maximus and the emperor’s son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) ensues. This can be perfectly summed up by Commodus own quote “The general who became a slave. The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an emperor.”

The fight scenes are epic, the acting is amazing and the story is fascinating. Gladiator is the movie which brought Russell Crowe into the Hollywood spotlight and made him the actor to have. Russell Crowe still claims this to be his favourite American film he has done and Maximus to be his favourite character he has portrayed. Joaquin does excellently as the much hated Commodus. You bleed with Maximus and you can’t wait for the arrogant Commodus to suffer.

Gladiator is as great now as it was 14 years ago. The special effects are still relevant today and could be released in theatres tomorrow with no issue. Just as I would ask any audience member watching this film and as Maximus asks the audience during one of his gladiator battles “Are you not entertained?” If you like action/ war movie’s this should be your top pick. Watch it again or watch it for the first time. Now after writing this review I am going to go watch it for the umpteenth time and hopefully I will finally be able to watch the first scene with my eyes open.
