GI JOE: RETALIATION: A Review

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION: A Review by Salty

What a huge week Salty has had – a million articles written (probably a slight exaggeration), heaps of films watched and back on top of things – now if you are interested in G.I. Joe: Retaliation or any of the actors then maybe you should suss out our Red Carpet Interviews from the Premiere in Sydney where pretty much the entire cast, sadly excluding Channing, were interviewed.

I am one of the people who actually LOVED the first G.I. Joe film. You can read my review from 3 and half years ago (god I have improved in writing) right HERE. But I found this film fun and it did help I have always been a Channing Tatum fan. I think he was great in the film and I loved the heroics and sci-fi/ fantasy aspect of the film. Something many of the world loathed – but regardless of how much people hated it it still made $300MIL and studios thought it was time for another one. They did blame the failure of the first one on Tatum so made a decision to replace him, not only that but kill him off, and give the world a much better lead in Dwayne Johnson and also throw in some cred with Bruce Willis. They made the film, set the release date as June 2012 and then did some test screenings – let’s just say they met with fury from the test audience. While the studios are easy to blame box office failings on a lead actor, the public was not. Not only that but by this stage Channing had become hugely popular from things like The Vow and 21 Jump Street. People were keen to see him starring in the new one. Oopsy silly studios losing faith. So they pulled the film for nine months and did heaps of re-shoots to give us some more of Tatum before they blasted him to smithereens  🙂 Haha. That being said, and it is not a spoiler as it had been common knowledge and announced, I can see how they turned the death of Duke into a major plot line and motivation for the film. They saved their asses and made a silly and over the top boy’s film with awesome gadgets, non stop action in 3D and as far as the film goes, I bloody loved it, I still do not forgive them for killing Duke, but the film is enjoyable to say the least.

I shall re-iterate that this is a G.I. Joe film so please do not judge it on Oscar worthy performances or plot lines that people will praise for eternity, or ever BUT if you want edge of your seat action, cool gadgets, cool characters and a body count, then this film is for you!! This one sees, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Duke’s Number 2 man. The evil Zartan, masquerading as the President, orders the annihilation of the Joes but three of them survive and somehow work out The Prez is not the Prez and set about proving this and bringing the world, and Duke, justice. On top of this Snake Eyes sets out to capture Storm Shadow for information and further justice. But the three Joes will need help, who do they call? The original, and only person they can trust, played by Bruce Willis, gun toting, perfect US citizen with a an arsenal to compete with North Korea, Joe.

Johnson is great as Roadblock, he is HUGE and his training has been out of control for this one. I liked him less than Duke as a character but he can fight and he is like the new Arnie, limited dialogue but big hits and a but easier on the eye than Arnie. Bruce Willis is playing John McClaine with a gun fetish and as I said, mammoth arsenal and silly one liners. Byung-hun Lee is Storm Shadow and my favourite character. Lee is soooooooooo hot and that body and the always white leather costumes (I need a moment :)) and the fact he is martial arts guru is way cool. I always preferred him to Snake Eyes as a) he talks and b) we get to see his face. It always spun me out that the evil Storm Shadow always looks amazing and shining in white and the heroic fighter of good, Snake Eyes, looks like an Imperial Storm trooper in his pure black bulky costume – the colours of right and wrong, good and evil are messed up :).

D.J. Cotrona, as Flint, and Adrianne Palicki, as Jaye, round out the gorgeous looking supermodel Joes and I liked them more than I was expecting. Cotrona is no Duke but Flint has some balls and does some crazy shit. Jaye is just beautiful and also a kick ass mean mofo. They are a good crew. There also a few new and old crew back with Jinx, Firefly and Cobra Commander that are all adequately played. Remember it is about action and fighting and not acting skill :).

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is out now and I think it is kind of a win win for both the studios and the public. I think the world will live without Duke and Tatum will be appearing in squillions of films as he is now getting larger and larger as an actor and the studios get a film that will gross more than the other Joe and I see the franchise rebooted and people should be excited because the next one is ready to roll. I do recommend it in 3D also for some great effects, especially the mountain running with Snake Eyes, Jinx and a hundred or so ninjas. I rate this one 7 out of 10 Resting Dukes.
