KERNEL MITCH’S REVIEW

It’s as if the scene at the end of The Long Kiss Goodnight where Geena Davis gets locked in a cool room got its own spin-off starring Dylan McDermott as a mechanic who is battling the Russian mafia in a deadly case of a stolen fortune and mistaken identity… or it’s a even a bit like Saw in a fridge… Thaw?

FREEZER – Starring Dylan McDermott

Freezer is an indie-thriller with a cast of 8; stingily staged on a singular sub-zero set. McDermott plays Robert Saunders, a mechanic who wakes up locked inside the freezer room of the restaurant where he was celebrating his birthday. The culprits? The Russian mafia. The reason? They believe he stole $8 million from them.

Yes, the films premise is weak and fails to deliver the suspense it deserves and even a satisfying climax despite being riddled with plot twists, misguided though they are. There are moments aplenty where I found the film gaining traction but then we’d veer off course and into a tree again when Saunders failed to capitalise on so many opportunities to easily escape.

There is nothing particularly groundbreaking about this film. I’ll give it points for being able to entertain my short 21st century attention span with a one set location but it’s not like that avenue hasn’t been explored before (I’m looking at you Buried… and even The Parking Lot/The Chinese Restaurant episodes of Seinfeld).

However, this film loses points with it’s clunky and frankly dumb dialogue and plot holes. Electrifying a metal shelf to stay warm without electrocuting the hero despite electrocuting someone to death minutes earlier and the line, “Baby, I wouldn’t give you the ice off my eyebrows.” If that’s his “Yippee-Ki-Yay Mother Fucker”, I wouldn’t blame McDermott for locking the writers (Tom Doganoglu and Shane Weisfeld) in a freezer until they came up with something better. Even Mr. Freeze had “ice to meet you”.

The film co-stars Yuliya Snigir who most recently appeared in A Good Day to Die Hard, obviously finding herself pigeonholed as your badass Russian bitch and Twilight’s Peter Facinelli in a role I didn’t think added to or subtracted from the film at all.

As weak and head shockingly bad as his wit is, Dylan McDermott’s character and his one-liners are what make this movie a little more unique, enjoyable and less serious as it’s other low-budget counterparts.
