ESCAPE PLAN: THE DVD REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Occasional Salty Kernel, DVD Reviewer, MITCH LEWIS, returns to review a whole bunch of DVDs coming out soon. First cab off the rank for Mitch is ESCAPE PLAN starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, oddly, for a film starring these two action stalwarts, it never got a cinematic release. Mitch offers insight as to why it missed out. ESCAPE PLAN is out on DVD and Blu Ray on FEB 19th, runs for 115mins and is rated MA15+. And thanks to our great friends at ENTERTAINMENT ONE HOPSCOTCH we have 5X copies of the DVD to giveaway. Just see below Mitch’s review to find out how to win. Competition closes on WED 19th February at 12pm.

If you’ve ever wanted to see a movie that features Arnold Schwarzenegger as an old man who can’t throw a punch, rent Escape Plan. If you’ve ever wanted to see a movie where Sylvester Stallone’s overly manscaped eyebrows outdo their appearance from the first Expendables, rent Escape Plan. If you’ve ever wanted to see a movie that features gangsta rapper 50 Cent as a computer nerd… seriously… rent Escape Plan. If you’ve ever wanted to see a movie where action icons Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger finally team up onscreen, rent The Expendables 2.

Let’s be fair for a second, I didn’t dislike this movie. I actually thought it had a somewhat Demolition Man sequel feel to it at times but I just don’t think it did justice to two of cinemas most prolific and recognisable action legends.

Stallone stars as Ray Breslin, a man who’s job it is to be incarcerated and break out of prisons in order to expose their security flaws… still not as bad as retail in my opinion but whatevs.

Breslin and his crew, Abigail (Amy Ryan) and Hush (Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson)… again… as a computer nerd… are hired by an ‘off-the-grid’ organisation who have constructed and operate the worlds most secure criminal facility that ‘doesn’t exist’, if you catch my drift. A place that leaves no paper trail, has no official location, no government affiliation and a place where the worst of the worst disappear to. The construction of this facility was built with the writings of Breslin’s reported security flaws from past missions in mind by the maniacal Warden Hobbes (Jim “Jesus Christ” Caviezel).

Once ‘arrested’ and placed into custody, Breslin gets to work in this mysteriously located prison but has his profession quickly interrupted by overly friendly prisoner Emil Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Despite their stubborn beginnings, Rottmayer proves useful to Breslin as the two of them attempt to solve the mystery of this legendary compound.

Sly and Arnie’s onscreen chemistry is valid here. They work really well with each other and even cast thirty odd years of experience aside to try their hands at a bit of acting. For one, Stallone is your straight man and Arnie plays the loose comedic role but it also opens the door for Sly to genuinely come off as intelligent and Arnie to get hysterically freaked out and start rambling dramatically in his native tongue. I liked it. The world is so used to seeing Arnie’s bulging eyes and hearing his gruff voice yell things like ‘GIT DOWN’ and ‘DO IT NOW’ but I’d never seen him like this before which was refreshing.

A lot of the sequences are far-fetched to buggery but in a movie with these two in it, you can’t expect anything less. Some of the computer generated cinematography is distractingly cheap and the fight choreography (what there is of it) is less-than-impressive but Swedish born director Mikael Hafstrom (1408 and The Rite) keeps the movie plodding along at a steady pace.

Jim Caviezel is a fantastic villain. The man knows how to do sinister well. After playing Jesus in The Passion of The Christ, he would most likely nail a portrayal of Lucifer if they ever released The Passion of The Anti-Christ.

This movie is mind-numbingly entertaining if you don’t go into it thinking you’ll finally get a legendary team-up of action heroes because all you’re going to get is War/Rogue Assassin or The Forbidden Kingdom.
