Enjoy Kernel Dara’s (Lady D) review of DIOR AND I, it is in art-house cinemas now thanks to Madman Films, it is rated M and runs for 90mins. Also, be advised it is in French, Italian and English with English Subtitles. All the best……….JK.

Chanel, Valentino, Vogue, YSL (now Saint Laurent) all of the big fashion houses and magazines have all had a fabulous documentary created about them. Now, it’s Dior’s turn.

For me personally, if I am feeling a bit low or uninspired I will watch a fashion documentary to try and gain some inspiration. I sit there in a darkened cinema with my eyes wide and a smile on my face watching the masterpieces unfold. DIOR AND I is no exception. The final scenes of the fashion show are simply beautiful and Christian Dior himself was just such an incredible designer.

The movie begins with the appointment of a new designer to the House of Dior, Raf Simons. Simons had previously worked on his own collections as well as for Jil Sander. He was well known for a more masculine, minimalist style so people thought that he was a very interesting choice and a curiosity was peaked. Simons was hired after John Galliano was spectacularly fired after a very public evening out where he had been overheard spouting anti-semetic remarks in a bar. After this, one of their spokespeople Natalie Portman boycotted the brand and it was her Oscars season for BLACK SWAN. So, the fashion house needed a new direction and Raf Simons was it.

The film begins with Raf being introduced to his new ateliers and the rest of the house. His first collection is to design the Haute Couture Collection for Fall/Winter 2012.

He has 8 weeks.

The film is beautifully interlaced with vintage film which is narrated over with Christian Dior’s words, as if spoken from a diary. We see grainy black and white fashion shoots and his explanation of how he designed for women. We also get to see so many iconic shots of his beautiful gowns.

The documentary is meant to be about Raf, however it is the ateliers and Raf’s assistant Pieter that steal the show. A lot of them have been working at the House for over 20 years, some for over forty years and Pieter is the go between for them and Raf.  It seems to be a job that once you begin you never want to leave. As said in the film “the treasure of the house is the atelier” and you can see why.

They begin looking through the archives, and Raf openly talks about the pressure of releasing a couture collection for a House with so much history. We are lucky enough to see some of the dresses from the archive as well as sketches and fabric swatches. It’s fashion history heaven! Raf, his assistance Pieter and one of the LVMH head up to Christian Dior’s family home and garden, this is a place from where he drew a lot of inspiration. It is magnificent.

The penultimate scene is the fashion show. They have chosen a private home in Paris, Avenue d’Lene which has been transformed into walls and walls of flowers, inspired by Jeff Koons Flower Puppy.  If only the technology was there that we could have also smelt the parade as I am sure that it would have been sublime. Watching the parade was quite emotional for me, to be able to watch the process from initial sketches, to samples being made to then the final product walking down the runway was beyond words.

If you love anything fashion then watch DIOR AND I, you won’t be disappointed. It will make you fall in love with fashion all over again.
