DEADPOOL 2 Fails to Capture the Mojo of the OG 💀💩L

It’s been two years since the groundbreaking potty mouthed invincible murder machine hit the screens and we finally got to see the sequel to DEADPOOL last night at the Australian premiere. It was highly anticipated and Deadpool’s/ Ryan Reynold’s lead up teasing skits, clips and harassment of Hugh Jackman has had me in a constant state of desperation for the actual movie. DEADPOOL 2 releases from 20th Century Fox. It is rated MA15+ and runs for 119mins. Ensure you stay through most of the credits, they are some of the funniest scenes – nothing at the very end except the best dub step song of all time hahaha.

Quite possibly the best official synopsis for a movie of all time – and not one word of it is accurate hahaha.

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfil his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the Yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

In truth – not in the slightest.

DEADPOOL 2 sees Wade taking on Cable, who is trying to kill a young kid, Russell. The motivation to protect is weak, assassinating someone based on a one minute talk from Russell is even weaker and Cable’s own motivations didn’t come across as strong as expected. The screenplay needed some desperate attention, it was bordering on GREEN LANTERN weak with much better jokes. Deadpool himself almost felt unwelcome and annoying by the end of the film. A film that at 2hrs long felt like 3hrs, but it is salvaged with the epic end-credits scenes. Worth the ticket price alone.

Humour wise only about 70% of the comedy made it home. Do not get me wrong – the 70% that did get home had me crying with laughter – the baby legs scene nearly killed me haha. You will get what you paid for, Wade aka Ryan Reynolds aka Deadpool gives it to every single superhero franchise and when he calls Cable Thanos I choked a little.

The opening credits are also hysterical poking fun at another franchise. These quips at the expense of the industry is what makes the DEADPOOL franchise as brilliant as it is but it felt it went for less 4th Wall Breaking to more tacky humour. I get it – that is what 💀💩L is but it felt cheaper this time and Wade became that guy at an event that has outstayed his welcome. Shave off 20mins, mostly out of one of the last scenes, tighten the script and this would have been a brilliant film.

Deadpool is still the anti-hero the world needs, and let’s face it – Deadpool is just Ryan Reynolds having free reign to be a cheeky little shit. We need more of this – less serious “you’re so dark, are you from the DC Universe?” to more taking the piss out of everything. We have enough Dark in every day reality, I am always glad to have a laugh with my escapism – especially when directed at the industry. Ryan Reynolds is brilliant in his role, it has made him and it will be what he is known for for the rest of time.

Julian Dennison is decent in his first big Hollywood movie, but the kid is a comic genius, this skill could have been used more. Brolin is such a bloody hot older man and I will love him in anything, however the Cable character is quite vanilla compared to Thanos and as a bad guy, he was pretty weak. He did have some wicked fighting and tech but it felt a little repetitive.

Karin Soni is a fan favourite as Dopinder, I want an entire Dopinder movie!!! It was great seeing a grown up Brianna Hildebrand, now with partner, Shioli Kutsuna as Yuki, but like the previous DEADPOOL movie Negasonic Teenage Warhead is grossly underutilised. The new (kind-of) hero-partner for Deadpool, Zazie Beetz as Domino, was awesome, loved her, but there is absolutely no point whatsoever for the other team members of X-Force. Seriously, it was criminal and bordered on insulting how underused Terry Crews and Bill Skarsgård were. Their entire scene and job interview needed to be left on the cutting room floor.

And enjoy the surprise from a couple of cameos that will crack you up!!

DEADPOOL 2 underfires. It was fantastic jumping through the fourth wall again with an insane Ryan Reynolds but the story was as weak as baby legs. Put it this way, I’ve seen DEADPOOL about 5x times and own it on Blu Ray. I will not be buying DEADPOOL 2.
