BLACK SAILS | SEASON 1 BLU RAY REVIEW & GIVEAWAY

BLACK SAILS is a seabound TV show, it is like VIKINGS crossed with DEADWOOD and set in the world of pirates. It is in fact a prequel “of sorts” set twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic TREASURE ISLAND. It is more realistic than most TV shows and is quite ballsy, grimy and what appears to be free from censorship. Filming has completed on the second season but on Wednesday 26th November season one releases on Blu Ray and DVD in Australia #woot #aarrrgggghhhhh and get excited me mateys! BLACK SAILS is releasing from Anchor Bay Entertainment Australia, it runs for 456mins and is rated R18+. The coolest thing – we have one complete Season 1 box-set on Blu Ray to giveaway!

The Golden Age of Piracy. New Providence Island is a lawless territory, controlled by history’s most notorious pirate captains. The most feared is Captain Flint. As the British Navy returns to reclaim their land and eradicate the pirates, Flint allies himself with Eleanor Guthrie, daughter of the local kingpin, to hunt the ultimate prize and ensure their survival. Many opponents stand in their way: rival captains; Eleanor’s ambitious father; and John Silver, a fast-talking young addition to Flint’s crew. From Executive Producer Michael Bay don’t miss the action-packed adventure as Captain Flint and his crew begin their quest for the largest haul of treasure in the world. Now do not let the Michael Bay name deter you, only a few things explode and it is much more realistic than you would imagine.

The characters in the show of Captain Charles Vane, Jack Rackham, and Anne Bonny were actual pirates in history that operated in the Caribbean. They have been fictionalised into the story and they are all on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima.

The show is pretty dammed cool. It is brutal, treacherous and appears to ignore any form of classification control, it drops swear words left right and centre, I was half expecting Swerengen to appear with a few C Bombs. It also has quite a bit of the sex, I mean pretty much hardcore sex strong enough to make everyone from the mid-west of the U.S of A run to church for an extra confession.

It stars a bunch of people you will not recognise but you will recognise Toby Stephens, the lead, he plays Captain Flint, the guy who struggles to keep his life and his crew together, after watching this show you would never want to be a pirate or a crew member, honestly, it totally sux and scurvy would seem a great escape. It also stars Zach McGowan (DRACULA UNTOLD, SHAMELESS), Hannah New (MALEFICENT), Luke Arnold (WINNERS AND LOSERS) and I have to mention Tom Hopper (loved him in MERLIN).

The show has great production values and it never looks cheap. I prefer the show when they are on the boat but they spend too much time on the island. I also feel that while the show has great cast, great action, remains gritty, it never launches like your GAME OF THRONES, or your DEADWOOD. It is missing that one true charismatic cast member that is pure evil, McGowan comes close but no cigar. And while all the extras are filthy and missing teeth etc, it always appears that the lead characters are that extra level cleaner.

The cinematography, especially the water scenes, by James O’Laughlin is amazing, he brought us the visuals for SANCTUM and KOKODA. Overall the show could be much better but it got on a more even keel when they returned to the seas and I think there will be a lot more on the boat in the second season, they would be stupid not to, it works, and it works well. While the show is no GAME OF THRONES, it is still much better than the last three PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN MOVIES. In fact the only similarities with Pirates is the location. Besides that this is much different, it is less Disney comedy and more pirates all killing, looting and trying to save their own asses. If you don’t mind swearing and like some pirates and wenching get into it!
