Baz’s THE GREAT GATSBY is Freaking Awesome – Read our Review and Watch the Salty Red Carpet Interviews

The SALTY POPCORN REVIEW of THE GREAT GATSBY and the RED CARPET REVIEWS BY SALTY KERNELS, LADY DARA SHASHOUA AND CODY SHEEHAN.

Baz is one of the most polarising directors in Hollywood – I have never seen such differing opinions of love and hate. For me – he is one of my top five directors of all time and for others, quite possibly the worst, and constantly laughed at or joked about. The hatred for his films is incredible – and so is the love. Romeo and Juliet changed my life, literally, I became obsessed and Leo has forever been my favourite actor on the planet. I was the projectionist for the Australian Premiere of R&J and Baz asked me if we were playing it in 70MM as he had never seen presentation as good in the rest of the world – that was it – SOLD – hook, line and tiara.

We had a great experience on this one, it is Baz’s highest opening film of all time and will surpass his highest grossing film of all time. I am one of the few people who actually enjoyed AUSTRALIA but do not hold this against me. I just get Baz – I see the vision and I understand what he wants to achieve and embrace it – I get immersed in all he does and it is basically theatre for the camera and it is amazing :). I was originally going to stand on the red carpet again and do the interviews for this one as it was time to meet my idol. Leo stood me up at both the Titanic and R&J premieres exactly two weeks before each premiere and was coming to this one – what did he do??? He waited until 72hrs before this one and cancelled – this was probably a blessing in disguise as I am not sure I should ever meet my idol but I had a tanty anyway and decided not to do the red carpet anymore. Enter Cody on the camera, and a slipped in Delta interview, and welcome to Lady Dara Shashoua for her first interviews – she shone and she will be missed when she abandons the Kernels to extend our popping corn to Melbourne. But without further ado enjoy the footage they both got from the premiere of THE GREAT GATSBY. There is some amazing dancing for nearly the first half followed by some great interviews with Baz and the towering beauty Elizabeth Debicki, and don’t forget Cody’s interview with the lovely Delta G.

SALTY POPCORN’S REVIEW OF THE GREAT GATSBY

All I can say really (total lie) is WOW. Gatsby was a big thing for me – I was praying Baz could gain the audiences love back after AUSTRALIA, and you could honestly feel the same emotion running through a lot of people prior to the film starting but then it opened on screen and you literally saw 400 people shut the hell up, and while everyone laughed and cried and maybe (in my case) let out a few little squeals of delight there was no interruptions to this film. It literally mesmerised myself and the audience. I was paralysed by movie joy and it is rare that there is never a moment of distraction but I could never take my eyes off the screen.

The scope of this film is out of control, it is HUGE on every scale, production, costumes (hello Oscar), 3D, acting (hello Leo, Joel and Toby nominations), scale, cars, story, music, romance – it is one of those films, that involve more stars than directors and actors, and they all aligned to bring something I found near on perfect.

Most readers know – I am a visual person, and this film is a pure visual orgasm, to me – PERFECT, to “unvisual,” stuffy, old, pain in the ass U.S. critics and Baz haters, it was “Baz going so overboard with his style he became a parody of himself.” I just see this as someone who does not share or understand Baz’s vision and the way he sees life. I pity the fool 🙂

The film embraces the traditional story which is really the great American Shakespearean tragedy made by an Australian in Australia that is pretty much the sad tale of The Wizard of Oz. It could also be the continuance of Titanic if Leo survived and decided to do everything right and un-deluded to marry Rose DeWitt Bukater. Let me explain.

Gatsby is the Wizard, he has all the tricks to delude himself and the people that he is someone else, he does everything he can to create the illusion he desires. Daisy is basically a mixture of the good and bad witches as, well, she can’t decide on a bloody thing and then there is Nick Carraway, he is the lion and the scarecrow and the tin man and well, heck why not throw in Toto. He is the heart and emotion of the film and the true hero and observer.

Then the Titanic angle, Jack decides to live and beat the shit out of an iceberg. He then realises the only way to keep Rose in the life she deserves, he must make his fortune and come and get her back – voila – here we are! The Great Gatsby.

But to be honest, this is a perfect story to film. Every single person is flawed. Gatsby, the man who will do anything to get the love and life deserved for the love of his life, never realised that at the time she never wanted the money, she wanted the man. Daisy, a spoilt rich girl who constantly had everything, was from old money, so confused, she went with easy and security. Nick, poor, observer, in fact, probably the only person not flawed. Tom Buchanan, too much money, old school, old money, a destroyer of people in his way as money will see him through – asshole.

The tragedy of this film is that it is really the flaws that make Gatsby perfect and while Gatsby is the most deluded person of the lot, he is also the most dedicated, the most passionate, the most brilliant of the lot. But he was also not from the world of the rich, he wanted money for a reason and dedicated everything to get what he needed, but was so caught up in his fantasy he never realised that the illusion of the perfection of Daisy was flawed. And, he really asked for way too much, again deluded and needing Daisy to be as in love and as dedicated as himself. SAD. Kind of like my regular delusions of Leo 🙂

One thing I literally hated about the film, Gatsby constantly saying “Old Sport ” – by the end I literally wanted to scream every time he said it – I know it has abundant meaning and school kids wrote about it when studying the book (I did) but it was still so annoying.

The acting in the film is a master genius stroke of casting. Leo = GOD and I am so glad he embraced his looks again for this one, something he has avoided for years and tried to be all manly and tough. It was also good to see his comic timing is still there for the few scenes where he is uncomfortable. It is one of the biggest reliefs of this film to actually see a Leo character have fun. Mulligan, beautiful and superb as Daisy, by the end of the film I literally hated Daisy for her choices, totes bitch and Gatsby ruiner :), Tobey – honestly, as good as Leo – nearly stole the show, Joel – just the perfect asshole, I think this is his best role. Elizabeth Debicki – HELLO – where have you been, brilliant performance and can’t wait to see more, and finally, Isla Fisher – just brilliant – award worthy small role.

Catherine Martin will win awards for the most amazing costumes I have seen on film, the detail and individuality is just phenomenal. I was gasping at the talent she has. There is also the music – the mashing of old music and modern music – it works really bloody well. I will own this soundtrack, I should mention that Baz went different this time for the music. For his R&J and MOULIN ROUGE the music blasts and pumps, for this one, he achieved more by playing the music in a lot of scenes quieter, the party scenes were unique in their near silent use of music in certain scenes. Finally the direction, Baz does go above and beyond, some may find it self parodying – I find it artwork and a surreal visual orgasm.

THE GREAT GATSBY releases in Australia on 30th May 2013 and if you love the work of Baz, you will love this beyond a doubt, if you are just a regular hater of the Baz you will whine and moan and loathe and bitch about it. For me – pre-ordering Blu Ray now and watching it again next week. I bow to thee Leo and Baz – your pairing is better than that silly Scorcese DiCaprio affair. 🙂 Worth a great and happy 4.5 pops. PLEASE BAZ – YOU HAVE EARNED MOST OF YOUR RESPECT NOW – SO GET ANOTHER LEO FILM HAPPENING.
