ADORATION: THE REVIEW, DIGITAL RELEASE AND DVD GIVEAWAY

I reviewed this one a little while ago for cinema release. I was not the hugest fan of the film but it is beautifully shot and has some spectacular cinematography and two win wins – 1) Xavier Samuel – I love him (the end) 2) Robin Wright – I love her (my god she is evil in House of Cards). Now a few months ago this film was released by a company called Hopscotch into cinema – the name has now changed and it is only to be known as ENTERTAINMENT ONE AUSTRALIA – or E-ONE for short. They have big changes going on. Firstly, this film, ADORATION is their first film to release digitally in Australia. It also releases earlier than on DVD/ Blu Ray.  This means you can download it from iTunes on March 21 and then on Blu Ray and DVD on March 26th (mum’s birthday – she may get a copy for her birthday – she will love it :)).

On top of that – with thanks to the lovely folks at  ENTERTAINMENT ONE AUSTRALIA we have five copies to giveaway on DVD. See below the review on how to win.

I was so keen on seeing this film as soon as I saw the trailer, firstly, it is the new film with Xavier Samuel in it. Hands down, my favourite Aussie actor. It also had Robin Wright in it – LOVE HER. Add to that Naomi Watts, the spectacular looking cinematography of the Australian coast and then it had James Frecheville in it – I thought he was the standout from Animal Kingdom. Everyone was referring to it as “The MILF Film” – look up the acronym if you don’t already know it. It all looked set to be amazing, it was adapted for the screen by Oscar winner Christopher Hampton, who brought us ATONEMENT and DANGEROUS LIAISONS, what could go wrong right? Well, close on everything, I must say, the film bordered on horrendously painful and I am incredibly saddened by my disappointment in it.

Based on the novella THE GRANDMOTHERS by the acclaimed Nobel Prize winning writer Doris Lessing, a fearless portrait of love, lust and the power of friendship, ADORATION tells the story of Lil (Naomi Watts) and Roz (Robin Wright), two lifelong friends living in a tranquil Australian seaside town, who embark on separate, passionate affairs that will change them forever. They start their passionate affairs with each other’s sons. Two boys “supposedly” in their late teens, early twenties (although both the guys really look like mid twenties). They are in a remote coastal town and it is so picturesque and just enticing to sun, sand, heating hormones and desire. I could see how this would happen.

It reminded me of my late teens, we used to camp every summer at The Basin for the entire six week holiday, it was all sun, ocean, salt, bare feet, salty burnt skin and was so sensual and just oozed near nakedness and horny teens. Actually living this lifestyle year round with limited other people to associate with besides your parents would lead the sexual desires to focus on what they have before them. I shall now quote Hannibal Lecter 🙂

Hannibal Lecter: That is his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? Make an effort to answer now.

Clarice Starling: No. We just…

Hannibal Lecter: No. We begin by coveting what we see every day. Don’t you feel eyes moving over your body, Clarice? And don’t your eyes seek out the things you want?

Point proved right there!

The film starts out beautifully and you can see how these beautiful people could all end up with each other, Naomi Watts and Robin Wright are just incredibly beautiful and have bodies like teenagers. You will understand why it got the nickname “The MILF film” immediately. Then there is Xavier Samuel, to me one of the hottest people to walk the planet. There is also Frecheville.

And this is where the film commenced cutting into my skin and rubbing ocean salt into the wound. Frecheville is woeful. Embarrassingly so – what idiot cast him in a romance film? He has two facial expressions and emotional deliveries in the film. Bland and plain numb. I did not find him sexual and he was so unbelievable in his role it was tragic, I actually felt for Watts, whose character has the affair with Frecheville’s character. I have more chemistry with my coffee mug.

The film has similarities to Hampton’s DANGEROUS LIAISONS but lacks what made Liaisons so spectacular – BETRAYAL. The film longed for betrayal or a murder or R rated sex scenes or some evil. In this it was very soft, very safe and because of this it lost out. The characters, while all flawed, were all relatively likeable and came across as somewhat bland. I would have given anything to hate one of them. Frecheville’s character, Tom, got close. He rocked the boat, had the most betrayal and while Tom was close on bringing some evil it was written so safe and played so poorly that by this stage I did not really care. The film just dragged by the latter stages as it slowly lost the plot.

That being said I found Robin Wright just amazing, she out acted everyone and her chemistry with Ian (Samuel) was superb. I cannot believe how beautiful she is and I can truly believe someone like Ian would fall in love with her. The other thing I really enjoyed was Watts and her scenes of ageing and baring herself without makeup. She is still beautiful but they accentuate her ageing face in comparison to Tom’s new and younger girlfriend. I also found the reversal of the norm refreshing – normally the ageing man will leave the wife for the younger beautiful woman but in this case the ageing woman leaves her husband for the younger, more beautiful man. Hello Demi Moore 🙂

The other winner in this film is the superb cinematography from Christophe Beaucarne, who filmed COCO BEFORE CHANEL and MR NOBODY, to name a few. He is also filming the upcoming French version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST starring Vincent Cassel. The film is just so stunning to look at, it captures the Salty Australian coast superbly.

Unfortunately the negatives of this film far outweigh the positives and this soap operatic film washes into the ocean on the salt encrusted wave that created it. See it to look at beautiful people in a beautiful Australian coastal town. That, and for Xavier Samuels butt and the amazing Robin Wright. ADORATION releases this MARCH 21ST on DIGITAL HD and then MARCH 26TH on Blu Ray/DVD, it is rated MA15+ and runs for 111mins.
