1D – THIS IS US: THE REVIEW

Besides myself being in gay love with Harry Styles and that Zayn’s eyes may melt me one day I have never thought much of 1D. They are stars that came about from a reality TV Show, The X Factor UK, where they actually came third. They were all individual entrants but squillionaire musical reality TV whore, Simon Cowell, thought that while they were not strong enough as solo artists they could work as a group. And so began the phenomenon that the entire planet is probably aware of by now…………….One Direction or if you are up on the Twitter and texting lingo – 1D.

In the space of two and a half years 1D has, in the eyes of social media, become the biggest band in the world OF ALL TIME. Their first song became number one in 37 countries before their album was even released and how do you suppose this happened? Teenage girls and social media. Pure and simple, they made it all happen, OK, I may have helped :). Photos, songs and videos of the band were posted on Twitter and Facebook and it spread like a wildfire, why this band you may ask? Well, they are basically the sexiest teenage dudes on the planet. AND – it did help that they are actually musically talented. As for being the biggest boy band in history, on sales and concert $$ earned they still have a long way to catch up to New Kids on the Block – their last concert grossed $46MIL from 80 shows where as 1D only made $5MIL from 62 shows. From this I just gather that 1D made their tickets affordable to attend all their shows where as NKOTB could set a higher ticket price for their final show. On top of that NKOTB would be selling tickets into giant arenas where as 1D were in smaller venues at the start of the tour. It should be noted that 1D sold out every single concert they performed at whereas NKOTB only averaged 90% sales. NKOTB had also been around for a LOT longer and would have mutliple generation fans where as 1D is limited to basically teenagers, 95% female at that.

NOW, I have never thought much of their music, it comes across as easy pop music written by bean counters, but honestly, after seeing this docco I get it and I am now a fan, I will not be purchasing 1D pillow cases and getting I Heart HS tats but I may sing along occasionally. I actually drove home after the screening and played the CD in the car and enjoyed it. I have thought and thought about since seeing the film on Monday, where I ended up with food poisoning but stayed to see out the film and still enjoyed it, that at the time The Beatles were a pop band with some rock music, something that 1D appears to be emulating, teenage girls may be the only people to love their music now but will they be classics in ten or twenty years time? Only time will tell. For the love of god WRITE THEM SOME GOOD SONGS.

But while they have only been hots teenage pop singers to me up to now, this film allowed us into their lives to meet them up close and personal and to get to know them a bit, and I liked them a lot more after seeing this film. Why? They are me at that age, that could easily have been me and my mates from school if we made different choices, and were musically talented, but they are just a group of guys who have a lot of fun and also sing to millions of people around the world. And the funny things and practical jokes they get up to on tour are brilliant. I would love to hang out with them for a week or two and experience the fun they get up to. And I never knew they couldn’t and basically never dance – I love this about them – they think synchronised boy band dancing is and never will be them.

They could never have been this successful if anything happened any other way. The dynamic of the five is paramount, if one person left the band it would never work, they are in a state of perfect balance with personalities and talent. Where as Bieber has turned into a trashy tool who will be forgotten or dead in a few years these guys actually look like they have their heads screwed on properly. As long as they stick together, never get destroyed by egos grown from head swelling fame and stay away from drugs then this could be a long and ever increasing success story.

I learned from this film that Harry is sexier than I ever thought, Zayn’s eyes are a black hole of delightful and smoldering mystery and that I never knew how awesome Niall is. He is so much fun, definitely the prankster of the group, love him. I also learned that Louis is most definitely in the closet for now and that Liam is probably the most sensible member of the group who will save all his money and invest it well. On top of this I learned that the guys are all amazing and have looked after their families and all came from normal middle class families.

This film will definitely not be for everyone, I think that most adults will hate the film before they even walk in the cinema doors, their prejudgment will have written their reviews prior to the projector rolling. But that is fine, they are not the target audience of the film. This film is for fans to get a piece more, it is a brilliant marketing opportunity and the way these guys are going things could be endless, why not a monthly TV show, an annual movie, and further emulate the Beatles?

I will actually watch this film again, especially on my home cinema Harry will have built for me when we start dating. 1D has some wicked 3D and released today. I happily award it 4 pops. If you have kids that like 1D – get excited – you will be seeing it these holidays. For the world’s sake, I truly hope they continue on the fun course they are on but for the love of god, can someone please write them some songs with balls that actually challenge them and get them respect from more age groups as well as their teenage fans.
