Olympus Has Fallen – Review – Starring Gerard Butler

Olympus Has Fallen – Review by Salty Kernel, Cody Sheehan

This film is an out there, yet interesting, concept. It’s the story of how the White House (office and residence of POTUS – President of the United States) is taken down and held for ransom by a group of Korean extremists.

I’m not sure if the fact that I am American made me enjoy this very high action packed piece of cinema that much more, or if it was my love of the country plus the brilliant acting performed by Gerard Butler (300) that made it so good. Very possibly both!

Mike Banning (Butler) is a senior at the Treasury after being demoted from the lead of the presidential detail because of an accident near Camp David resulting in the death of the First Lady. When a mass ambush attack hits the White House from all sides killing thousands and taking President Asher (Eckhart), Banning leaps into action to stop the terror and get to the route of the problem.

Brace yourself. This movie is action, all action, intense, heavy and gut wrenching action. Just about all the action that every guy who’s into shoot ’em up would love. There were maybe only 10% of scenes in the whole story that did not involve someone dying or being killed.

Butler plays Banning very well. He is ruthless, strategic and has the patriotic vision of his country in mind as he tears through the brigade of constant gunmen sent to kill him. The fact he knows as much about the White House as the President, due to his time in Secret Service, helps him to unlock clues and hidden traps that no one else would know. This would have to be my favorite role Iv’e seen Butler play to date. It’s grit and armor mixed with heroism and patriotism.

I cannot forget the great portrayal of Allen Trumbull, Speaker of the House (Morgan Freeman). We know that Freeman played Mandela in Invictus as well as about a hundred other roles you know him from. This role is more patriotic but in a really good way. One of my most enjoyable scenes would have to be when Freeman tells the US General to shut up during a heated argument. “I’m the acting Commander-In-Chief, if I need your help or opinion, I’ll ask for it!”.

After a quick video conference demand by the terrorist from inside the White House bunker, Trumbull (Freeman) gives the coolest immediate list of tasks that need to happen, starting, of course, with his coffee order. In the blink of an eye all state officials at the table scatter to work to get the acting President what he needs.

I experienced a roller-coaster of emotions watching this film from anger to anxiety due to the anxious pace of the film – this just added to the excitement. Some may love, hate or be on the fence about this rendition of presidential movies. I loved it and will probably go to get in on BluRay when it comes out. I doubt it will win any awards but it’s a great piece of large popcorn and Cola entertainment. I rate it 8500 out of 10000 bullets (there’s a lot of them!) or in Salty terms – 8.5/10. On a personal note: I found it bizarre and a bit scary that the morning after watching this, Boston was tragically hit by 2 or potentially 3 acts of disgusting terrorism. I have family and friends in Boston and to go from watching a fictional terror story to seeing visuals of a real one is surprising, and makes me sick to my stomach. Not gonna lie, I’ve had night mares the last night or two. Hoping all in Boston best wishes from myself and Salty Popcorn.
