GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY | MOVIE REVIEW

I love me some Marvel action, THOR, X-MEN, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS and to a slightly lesser extent IRON MAN. They are truly the epitome of blockbusters. Big budgets, big action, production values run by corporations. Give me art house any day but give me my popcorn fix with some Marvel. When the first trailer came out for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY the world went nuts, I had never heard of them, never got into comics and I tweeted how much I disliked the first trailer. People who have followed me for years on social media but never spoken all came out of their cyber stalking shadows to tell me the hell off and ask if I needed mental evaluation. I stand by the call. Then the second trailer came out and I was like “wooooaaaahhhh this looks much better, I am in.” Then Kernel Jack and I hit up the screening for this and I was like HOLY BLOODY FLYING FREAKING AMAZEBALLS I LOVE YOU (to the film, not Jack, he never puts out). GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is out Thursday 7th August from Disney Pictures Australia and Marvel Australia and New Zealand in Australia, with special preview screenings this coming weekend prior to release. It will be rated M, runs for 121mins and MUST BE SEEN ON THE BIGGEST, LOUDEST SCREEN YOU CAN FIND IN 3D.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY | SALTY POPCORN MOVIE REVIEW | PETER QUILL AKA STAR-LORD (CHRIS PRATT)

REVIEW BY JASON KING

This is the most science fiction of all the marvel universe and is more like a cross between SERENITY (god awful film that more people will hate me for) and STAR TREK (the movie reboots) than say, an IRON MAN film. It is some of the most epic science fiction I have seen but, before I gush some more, I should probably tell you what it’s about.

Peter Quill is a young boy, let’s go with 8yrs old, his mother has just died from cancer in front of him after he was too scared to hold her hand and his grandfather is left to care for him. Peter runs out of the hospital in a grief stricken emotional need for escape and runs into a field outside the hospital. Right where a spaceship appears and kidnaps him for a life of space. About now all I was thinking was “oh jeez, that poor grandfather has to live a life of losing his daughter and his grandson disappearing into thin air.” Horrible.

But then we jump years into the future and Peter Quill, probably closing on thirty years old would prefer to be known as Star-Lord and is an intergalactic thief, basically, a loser, but hey, he looks good and has some good gadgets.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY | SALTY POPCORN MOVIE REVIEW | GAMORA (ZOE SALDANA)

Star-Lord steals an orb from a vault very a-la Indiana Jones style and so begins the epic action, after escaping from people who are after him for stealing the orb a bounty is placed on his head. A couple of bounty hunters are after him, as is a Gamora, the adopted daughter of the bad dude. Everyone in the film has their own motives but these pack of different people all end up together and slowly form into the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The success from this film, that I usually loathe, is the serious action, pending doom thing with goodies and baddies is then mixed with comedy. I detest it. But in this film it more than works, it makes the film. The references to the 70s, 80s, Kevin Bacon and music in this film set it apart from the other films in the Marvel canon, it is a pop culture homage mixed in with science fiction – and I freaking love it – also got the poops when I found out that JB did not have soundtrack yet, I NEED THE SOUND TRACK. Just look at these songs on the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY AWESOME MIX 1:

  1. “Hooked on a Feeling” Performed by Blue Swede
  2. “Go All the Way” Performed by Raspberries
  3. “Spirit in the Sky”* Performed by Norman Greenbaum
  4. “Moonage Daydream” Performed by David Bowie
  5. “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” Performed by Elvin Bishop
  6. “I’m Not in Love” Performed by 10cc
  7. “I Want You Back” Performed by Jackson 5
  8. “Come and Get Your Love” Performed by Redbone
  9. “Cherry Bomb” Performed by The Runaways
  10. “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” Performed by Rupert Holmes
  11. “O-O-H Child” Performed by The Five Stairsteps
  12. “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” Performed by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY ROCKET AND GROOT MOVIE POSTER
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY | SALTY POPCORN MOVIE REVIEW | ROCKET (BRADLEY COOPER) AND GROOT (VIN DIESEL) MOVIE POSTER

The acting is awesome and HELLO CHRIS PRATT. Star-Lord actor Pratt is about to become a household name, I always took him for B grade romcom, will pay no-attention-to-actor. Instead we get a bulked up freaking hottie that is a comedian, caring, loving, never takes himself too seriously and all-round lovable, I kind of picture him a bit like Han Solo, totes love the dude. I will now watch everything the guy is in after this film. Then there is Zoe Saldana as Gamora, it appears she fell in love with her flatmate at Star Fleet Academy and turned herself green. She is a machine in this and just an amazing character and counter to Star-Lord. Then there is Rocket and Groot, Bradley Cooper as a raccoon is mind blowing, easily my favourite character and I have no shame, totes have a crush on a raccoon haha. He is the muscle and the brains rolled into one, he also has the best mate companion and basically life partner Groot, the walking talking tree, although he only says five words in the film, he does repeat those words a lot, and Rocket can interpret them, to much laughter, on many occasion.

Dave Bautista is admirable as the revenge filled Drax as is John C. Reilly, Djimon Housou, Glenn Close and Michael Rooker all filling various parts. Special mention to Karen Gillan (Dr Who) as the bad step sister Nebula. Never recognised her in that fantastic costume but she owned the evil role.

Now a minor grievance about the film and what lost it one pop. Ronan’s (Lee Pace) reason for wanting to destroy the planet. There is literally so much going on in this film and the introduction of so many characters that I may have missed this. The evil bad dude, Ronan, is trying to get the orb that Star-Lord stole in the beginning so he can destroy a planet, I just found this was not fleshed out enough, either that or I lost it in the plot being overwhelmed by so much cool. I just didn’t see his reasoning was justified enough, what was the actual motive? Take Eric Bana’s Nero in STAR TREK (2009) – his justification to destroy the Vulcan homeworld was based on pure hatred and despair. In this I just took it as “yep, bad guy Ronan is going to destroy the planet” but no idea why, this was a weak point in the film, as while he looked epically bad and did some evil, he really wasn’t as epically evil as some other bad guys out there. When I asked Kernel Jack his thoughts, he said the exact same thing.

I also found that while the humor is incredibly well done from a screenplay from (also director) James Gunn and Nicole Perlman, some of the jokes fell flat. Easily forgivable because not everything is funny to everyone and it was more than clever enough to keep me entertained. Gunn has given us an epic contender in the Marvel universe and I cannot wait to see more from him, I totally love that his last film was MOVIE 43 (LOL) – I actually loved that film for being so completely insane.

That minor plot issue and minor comedic fault aside the film is more than made up with visuals that will make your head explode – this film fills every frame and everything you see is just awesome. From the epic costumes to the starships to the fighting and scenes of action. It takes these kind of films to the next level.

I applaud – this soundtrack will be on loop in the car in two days time and this Blu Ray will be viewed multiple times, and I will be seeing this in a cinema again. And the greatest news – the film ends with THE GUARDIANS WILL RETURN printed on the screen. The sequel is already slated for July 28th 2017. This first installment starts fleshing out the true nature and past of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord and you can see the film has set up so much for future sequels, it really was clever franchise film planning there. Also, our print we watched was not 100% complete – it was missing the standard Marvel fare of a scene at the end of the credits – make sure you stay and watch it.

I am sure my crush will last for you until 2017 Rocket. And to close, in Kernel Jack’s own words “4/5 pops – I had a semi-chub.” Bahahaha
