FAST AND FURIOUS 6 HAS A ROARING ENGINE

FAST AND FURIOUS 6: A Review by Salty Kernel, Nick Stanbrook

They’re back!

Oh my are they back.

The ads had finished and the screen went black. An engine begins to rumble and then it roars. If anyone needed a reminder of what they were about to watch, they just got it. Fast and Furious 6 was HERE.

A ex-Special Forces Soldier, who specialises in vehicular warfare, is stealing military technology, in order to build some kind of thing that isn’t really that important apart from the fact that it would be really bad if he succeeds.  Agent Hobbs (The Rock) is tasked with stopping this vehicular madman, and he asks the best drivers he knows, Dominic Toretto and his team.

That’s about all you need to know, and to be honest you probably aren’t going to see this movie for the plot.

This is the fourth instalment from director Justin Lin. His experience with the franchise has brought back all the things that make Fast and the Furious so good. There are faster cars, cheesy one-liners, badass attitudes, crazy car chases, insane explosions, and just pure awesome ridiculousness.

The Fast and the Furious franchise still demonstrates how you are meant to film a car chase. It is loud and fast paced, but the audience never looses track of who is winning, or where they are going. The editing gets quick and jumpy but never to the point of confusion. I was in my seat thinking, how on earth was this filmed, and imagine having to edit this sequence together, there must have been over 100 different shots in 30 seconds.

Some of the action sequences in this movie are insane. There are cars flying everywhere, a tank gets involved, there are harpoons and aeroplanes. The action is amazing, they went bigger and better, after I thought they couldn’t go any bigger or better. Fast and the Furious 6 is at some points approaching the too ridiculous area. As the explosions get bigger, and the crashes get worse, everyone was still somehow surviving, I was hoping they wouldn’t go too far. Ridiculous action movies can only go so far until they become outright comedies. I was worried, but it always came back to reality.

The cars! The cars are incredible. It is a showcase of all the cars that you will never get close to owning, before we can drool over them for too long, they have already been crashed or blown up, in true Fast and the Furious style.

Tej (Ludacris) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) provide the comedic relief. Tyrese Gibson manages to ease some of the tension and remind everyone that this is all just a bit of fun.  He does edge towards the side of annoying, but manages to ease off just enough.

Some of the bad things have also returned. Vin Diesel’s and Paul Walker’s acting has not improved. It is still cardboard acting with muscles.  Speaking of Muscles, The Rock (Dwayne Johnson)! The Rock is looking bigger then ever! Coming off the back of his return to wrestling and his role in Pain and Gain, the bodybuilders turned criminals movie, he is looking massive. He controls the scenes but never takes away from what is happening, he is funny and serious and actually not too bad an actor.

The plot is alright, it is nothing special, a fairly formulaic cops and robbers story. A few twists are thrown in, that I didn’t see coming, but had no real effect. This is because some of the side characters that are involved in these twists will never have the same relationship with the audience that the rest of the team have. You can’t build the same amount of connection that has been worked on over 6 movies.

One major negative that I could see someone having, is that it is much of the same. Being a fan of the franchise I am happy to just consume the Fast and the Furious formula, knowing what I am going to get. However for someone who isn’t a fan, I could see them wanting something new or different, and this is nothing new, it is just a better version of what has gone previously.

After a twist in the plot, and one more insane action scene taking place on the world’s longest runway. There is a nice wrap up with a bit of emotion. Oh there is one more thing, there is a tiny little sneak peek, just really tiny and insignificant. Not really, it is actually really unexpected and I’m still questioning if it actually happened., but you will have to see it for yourselves.

I was physically tired after this movie, it was so unbelievably action packed, that I had to go home and lie down. I got exactly what I expected. I got insanity in fast cars. I didn’t get quality acting, or a deep immersive plot. I got the same fairly two dimensional characters. But there was also all the things people have come to love about the Fast and the Furious franchise. Justin Lin knows what he is trying to make, an action movie. He succeeds in doing this, we are given the movie that everyone expected and everyone wanted.

This is Fast and the Furious 6 and it is awesome.
