BAD NEIGHBOURS aka NEIGHBORS | THE REVIEW

I was always going to love this movie, if you know me you will know Zac Efron and I are to wed one day, add to that I will be having an affair with Dave Franco, and after seeing this Rose Byrne will be looking after our offspring. But if I remove my love for Zac and my lack of fondness for comedy films in general you will be happy to know that I found this hands down one of the funniest movies I have seen, IN MY LIFE. My all time favourite comedy is easily DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS from 1988 starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin. BAD NEIGHBOURS, or if you live in the U.S., NEIGHBORS is a perfect comedy. It is out for previews this weekend in Australia with proper release to everywhere on THUR 8th May. It is rated MA15+ (borders on R) and runs for 97mins.

REVIEW BY JASON KING

Mac and Kelly Radner (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) have recently moved into a house with their relative newborn. They are both married college sweethearts who are coming to terms their life is over now they have a baby, their college party days are pretty much dead. The house next to them is up for rental and they are hoping for a nice quiet couple and have their hopes pinned on the happy gay couple. Instead, they get a fraternity, a college house filled with teenage party boys who are determined to make the records of the biggest party of all time for their frat. The frat is led by a living statue of David, Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron) and his VP, Pete (Dave Franco). Mac describes Teddy as someone a gay guy would design on a computer and by this stage the laughs had already started and from here on out they pretty much never end. During the frat’s first party Mac and Kelly go over and ask them keep it down, they end up joining the party and reliving some college fun, at the end of the party, the following morning, Mac and Kelly promise that if they ever have any noise issues they will contact Teddy and will never call the police. That same night the huge second party is going on and Teddy isn’t answering his phone so the Radner’s call the cops ‘anonymously’. They are found out and war is on, don’t fuck with the frats, so to speak. But frats, be warned, Mac and Kelly were there not long ago. You have met your match.

I was gobsmacked at how good this film is, I literally choked I was laughing so hard and pretty much had to just remove my glasses as I was wiping my eyes every five minutes from constant crying with laughter, the fight scene at the end was too much for me, it was commencing breathing difficulties, I described it as “whooping laughter” when the film finished – could not stop. It is like the first time you saw South Park. It is sometimes crass and goes way too far, but if you aren’t willing to push the boundaries then get out of the industry, don’t aim for gold, create platinum people and this is what Nicholas Stoller has done with this film. He has directed FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, GET HIM TO THE GREEK and THE FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT, with these he lightly pushed the envelope, in this one he fills the envelope with pooh, throws it on your porch and sets it on fire. It is not for the elderly, this is a total modern film, if you are aged 15 – 50 you should love this, more so at the younger point of the scale, it is so relevant to today’s college kids with little “in the know” references and tongue in cheek humour. For example – 420 – know what it means? Look it up 🙂 The parties reminded me of my younger years and thinking to myself, “I did that,” “wish I never did that” haha – I will leave it to you as to what I did 🙂 My mum reads these reviews haha. But no I did not take a mould of my dick to make money from selling dildos 🙂

The film also breaks the norm in comedy films. Most of them are so formulaic, start out really hilarious, then wean in some drama, then make the last third of the film a complete drama as the “idiot” realises they are doing it all wrong (normally to a girl) and then have some unfunny, almost throw away, comedy at the end to remind us it was comedy. BAD NEIGHBOURS has a message and it is a good message about growing up, the film also has a huge heart, but it gives us this message without detriment to the story and flow of the comedy. In fact, the story of this film actually adds to the comedy, it gives it reason and more enjoyment.

Now the cast is one of the best comedy casts of all time. I have to say it – the best roles of Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne’s careers. These guys are just epic in this film. Rogen has shed is arrogant, and somewhat annoying stoner persona, but adopting an older, more mature, thinking, stoner persona. It is a win win and for once, he is “semi” the smart guy in the film. Rose Byrne is his funniest comedy partner I have yet seen, and to be honest, she steals a lot of the scenes, I am totally in love with her on film now, she is one crazy woman and it makes the film. I am not telling you about specific scenes as they need to be enjoyed without being told them. And then we have Zac Efron, I love the guy, but his reinvention on film from Disney pin up to worldwide frat pin up is just great. He has become a man and his comedy is amazing, his looks, just %$#@*^&&(&)*(**^^$%$#$%^&&()*(*&^^$$#$%$&* is all I can say. His partnering as the nemesis of Rogen in this is platinum, they are pretty much the same person, Rogen is Zac in 10yrs and 9438592487928769879845 beers and cones 🙂

A brief mention to Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Craig Roberts (Ass Juice, and star of SUBMARINE), and Lisa Kudrow. They are all amazing in this film. They could all have had more screen time but the leads were so great it worked out well.

The film does go way too far on numerous occasions, do not take your mum to this one. But if you are prepared to possibly die from laughter, can understand or accept the youth of today and are not shocked by dicks, asses, Rogen naked, babies chewing on condoms, babies being set up for Breaking Bad meth photos, air bags, dildos, ass-juice, jizz face or Jack Ass styled humour then this one is for you.

I am pre-ordering it on Blu Ray and am watching it again in the cinema next week when it releases. It is that good!
