REVIEW BY ANDREW BRUSENTSEV

AND SO IT GOES piqued my interest for many reasons. Firstly it is helmed by Rob Reiner (who has given me such joy in the genius THE PRINCESS BRIDE and two of my popcorn faves WHEN HARRY MET SALLY and A FEW GOOD MEN), it’s written by Mark Andrus (who gave me another favourite in AS GOOD AS IT GETS) and stars Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton. What could go wrong? Well dear reader, plenty.

Rob, Rob Rob what has happened? Are your best days that far behind you? A man of your skill should have known better, he really should have. The usually reliable Douglas and Keaton walk through this one as if in a coma. They fumble their way between typical mediocre narrative and gooey caramelised love after love schtick. It really is pretty canned romantic territory which has been done to death.

AND SO IT GOES | SALTY POPCORN MOVIE REVIEW | OREN LITTLE (MICHAEL DOUGLAS)

Oren Little (Douglas) is a veteran Connecticut real estate agent. Nobody likes Little very much. Not his co-workers, not his clients and definitely not the tenants of his riverfront fourplex called “Little Shangri-La”. He is cranky and cantankerous with everyone. He unleashes verbally on everyone around him, children, the elderly, strangers and even dogs. Does this have something to do with the death of his wife from cancer over a decade ago? Oren believes he has the solution to it all. All he needs to do is sell his family mansion and retire to Vermont away from everyone.

Leah Hartman (Keaton) lives next door to Oren. Her husband also died a while ago. She is retired and has reinvented her life as a lounge singer. Actually some of the worst parts of the movie are when we shift to seeing Keaton perform. Her voice is really not that crash hot (was that Reiner’s intent?). These scenes are pretty limp and quite boring. Keaton has channelled this role before. Actually has done it for the past decade in various movies. She is an actress with so much more depth than this.

Oren’s estranged son (Scott Shepherd), a recovering heroin addict, shows up one day out of nowhere and informs Oren that he is bound for jail. He also announces he has a 9-year-old daughter (played by Sterling Jerins). Oren is resistant but Leah overhears the conversation and when she meets the little girl quickly takes her in. We all know where this is going don’t we?

The rest of the movie plays out exactly how you would expect. Oren and Leah bond over the little girl and also over Leah’s jazz singing (warbling?). This really is movie of the week stuff and it is played that way by a cast who are capable of much more.

AND SO IT GOES | SALTY POPCORN MOVIE REVIEW | OREN LITTLE (MICHAEL DOUGLAS) AND LEAH (DIANE KEATON) OUT TO DINNER

There are moments where you think the movie will move beyond its cliqued formula. Reiner though breaks it up with jarring jokes and inappropriate tonal shifts which jar it away from any chance of their being an emotional heart. Not at one point could I not predict what the scene was attempting to show us. It was like Rom Com bingo. Here we reach the inevitable first kiss, here the taut misunderstood fight then tearful resolution. It really is that paint by numbers. I love romantic comedies and there is a formula but this was barely even trying to show us anything beyond the mundane.

Rob, Michael and Diane you all should know better. Rob perhaps you should revisit your past movies as there is some absolute golden work back there in your past. I hope that you can find it again and make it part of your future.
